Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/11/2019

» Pimalai Resort & Spa lives up to its name, which is derived from Sankrit, meaning a piece of paradise. Your journey to get there is an experience in itself. Guests are whisked away comfortably (and for free) in a minivan from Krabi Airport to an exclusive jetty to board a Pimalai boat. While onboard, you can nurse a cold drink while taking snapshots against the deep blue sea and various islands along the way.

» Mumford & Sons is coming to Bangkok for their debut performance! The Grammy-award winning British rock band, which consists of Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane, was formed in 2007 and has released four studio albums so far. Their debut album Sigh No More climbed up to No.2 on the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, eventually earning them Best British Album of the Year at the Brit Awards 2011. Their second album Babel received a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2013. These are just a fraction of their long list of accolades and nominations they have garnered. It is so long that it warrants a separate page on Wiki!

Honour Loy Krathong the right way

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/11/2019

» If you think I'm going to point out how ironic Loy Krathong (November 11) is, you're wrong, dear readers. But, in case you need a refresher, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever that we ask for forgiveness from the Water Goddess for using and contaminating her water by dumping beautifully decorated floating baskets (which overnight turn into garbage) on her.

» "Disaya x Dry Clean Only Bangkok" collection is an unlikely collaboration between two brands, each with a distinctive aesthetic. Disaya "Aom" Sorakraikitikul and her namesake brand is known for being demure, luxurious and feminine and can't be any more contrary to Patipat "Best" Chaipukdee's Dry Clean Only Bangkok, which is known for its street and rebel appeal (that has even won Beyonce's approval).

Old-timey ads that can't be run today

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/11/2019

» The purpose of an advertisement is primarily to sell products but it also serves as a mirror to reflect the culture and societal values of its day. Before the bombardment of ads on YouTube and on our Facebook newsfeed, there were ads from the past that have accidentally become amusing by today's standard.

    555 Headlines

» Looking at your newsfeed can give you a sense of doom and gloom these days. Venice faces its worst flood in 50 years. Koala becomes "functionally extinct" because of the (at the time of writing) ongoing bushfires in Australia. Another Thai factory was shut down and workers were laid off en masse. If you need a break from bad news like I do, you're in luck. Here are three funny headlines -- unintentionally or not -- to lift up your mood.

    (E)Special(ly) (Ironic) Days

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 06/12/2019

» The point of setting up holidays and special days is to celebrate or observe a cause, a thing or an event of significance. But as I scan through the 2020 calendar (to plan to use all of my days off in advance), I can't help but find that some special days in Thailand have taken an ironic turn.

Questions for Future Miss Universe Thailand

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/12/2019

» It seems every Thai was talking about Miss Universe 2019 earlier this week (and I'm sure we'll be hearing about it for another week). Even though our Fahsai didn't win the title, she reached the top five and made us proud. What got people talking so much, besides how gorgeous she looked, was how she answered the question, which many think was picked for Thailand. MC Steve Harvey asked her, "Government surveillance is used to keep many nations and their people safe. But some believe this invades our right to privacy. What is more important to you, privacy or security?" Fahsai gave a PC answer, saying the government should find a way to keep people safe without invading people's privacy. A very safe answer but how would you come up with an answer to a complicated question in 30 seconds? A few people said her safe answer was because she wanted to return to Thailand.

» You can now add a photo-taking spree to your Samui itinerary. Central Festival Samui, in co-operation with TAT and various partners, is hosting a mini street art fest for the inaugural edition of "Samui, The Island of Happiness" campaign until January. Six noted artists -- three Thais and three foreigners -- have adorned six landmarks on Samui so tourists and locals can add cool shots to their IG feeds. I checked in at all of them to give you a gist.
