Dim hopes for peace talks

» The situation in the deep South has for 11 years alternated between bad and worse. During that time, there has been no sign of improvement. The last government tried a different tack from the regular military-type reaction to events in the area. It signed on two years ago this month for face-to-face talks with a separatist group. The military regime now has rightly picked up the policy, made some changes and will pursue the contacts again. The government of Malaysia continues to be helpful in this alternative process.
