    The Why Files: Thai Edition

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 29/08/2014

» 1. Why do cashiers at convenience stores offer you a plastic bag even when you’re just purchasing a pack of gum? Do they have a quota of plastic bags they must give away in a day to fill?

    Soi sagas

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 05/09/2014

» You could be forgiven if you can't keep up with all the clampdowns that are taking place each day. If you've missed out on these most scintillating and groundbreaking updates, it's basically just authorities enforcing common sense upon Bangkokians who presumably missed the class on basic etiquette and safety.

    Finding a Traf-Fix

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 18/10/2013

» This is the point where I imagine you feign horror and dramatically ask, "But why, oh Buddha, why?!", while you clutch your forehead in your hands. Yes, I like to think I have the ability to inspire such passionate reactions in my dear readers (but in reality, we all know I'm just setting up this column to sound more interesting than it actually is).

If Bangkok was redesigned to reflect reality

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 14/06/2013

» For far too long now, Bangkok has tried to keep up with modern societies by implementing foolish systems like democracy, laws and traffic lights. Well, spoiler alert: It's just not working! Instead of wasting time trying to blanket the capital with a "one city fits all" mould, why don't we just restructure Bangkok into a place that suits our current reality? For starters, we could...

    Dear newly-elected future Bangkok governor,

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 01/03/2013

» First off, heartiest congratulations on your imminent victory. I'm sure you've got the celebratory champagne ready to pop open... oh wait! I hope you aren't planning on consuming any alcohol till after midnight on voting day, since the rest of Bangkok has had to suffer through a drinking drought all weekend because of your election. You don't want to start your new term by breaking any laws, do you?

    Safety first?

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 25/01/2013

» Depending on who you ask, Bangkok is an amazing/horrible, peaceful/chaotic, idyllic/nightmarish place to live. Just like every other developing city, we have our share of problems. And just like every other developing city, we try to improve our surroundings and protect people from harm.

    Traffic management 101

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 19/10/2012

» Observing that there are many horrendous drivers in Bangkok would be as original as stating that today there will be weather. We've all muttered profanities under our breath while stuck behind the person driving slower than a three-legged elephant. We've all seen our lives flash before our eyes when sitting on a bus with a driver who thinks he's an F1 racer. We've all slammed on our brakes when a dickwad driving a luxury car suddenly cuts in front of us.

    Putting the "h" in "stupid"!

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 23/11/2012

» Just this week alone, President Barack Obama and Chinese premier Wen Jiabao visited Thailand, presumably because it's high season for travel in the superpower calendar. And who doesn't love it when important people come here? It gives us the chance to adorn them with garlands, giggle when they attempt to speak Thai (not to mention swoon when they wai), and most notably offer them a free tourism pitch for our most amazing country!
