» Ever since its first title was released in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (known colloquially as the NES), the Final Fantasy franchise has been -- and arguably remains -- one of the best-selling franchises in the global gaming industry, with millions of players worldwide excitedly awaiting each new release. This year, after a decade-long wait, fans of the series were treated to the 15th main entry to the series, titled simply (and ironically, considering the franchise's name) as Final Fantasy XV, the first single-player, supposedly true-blood Final Fantasy game to be released since Final Fantasy XIII in 2009 (or even longer, depending on who you ask).

» It's been a long time coming, but Mario -- the crimson-clad, mustachioed, Japanese/Nintendo-born Italian plumber -- has finally hopped his way onto smartphones in the form of Super Mario Run, the mushroom-chugging, fireball-flinging coin maniac's debut feature on touch-screen devices. Downloadable for free now on iOS and next year for Android, the game's simplistic touch-based platforming is great, losing none of the precision of control and inventive level design synonymous of Mario games.

Horizon Zero Dawn, the latest Action-RPG from PlayStation-exclusive developer Guerrilla Games, is one such rarity, a wholly original game that deserves the highest praise for its gorgeous, meticulously-realised world and ambitious story, dealing with such themes as creation and artificial intelligence, even if much of its gameplay is admittedly derivative of many open-world games before it.
