Potty about pottery

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 17/11/2016

» Sometimes, precious things are just under our nose. So is Sam Khok district of Pathum Thani province. Situated about 50km from the heart of Bangkok, Sam Khok is a centuries-old community dating to the early Ayutthaya Period about 600 years ago. Much of local history and art can be learned through temple visits in this area. One-day trips are good choices because of Sam Khok's close proximity to the capital and convenient routes.

To the beat of the drum

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 29/06/2017

» Nan is a northern city which was founded more than 700 years ago, and has unique art and culture. Its people have a proverb saying that Nan's heavenly sounds are "the sound of beating gongs and drums", "the sound of rice-pounding mortars" and "the sound of scripture-reciting monks". They believe the city continues to prosper as long as it is rich in food and resources, the people live comfortably, Buddhist monks are good and the sound of musical instruments and the puja drums resonate as offerings to the Lord Buddha.

Precious lessons for protecting our nature

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 13/06/2016

» Last week, there was good and bad news about the environment. I learnt a lot about environmental protection measures during my June 6-7 visit to Japan's Yakushima Island, of which 20% of the total area is registered as a World Natural Heritage Site by Unesco. Later on June 9, I was happy to hear that various groups of people planted trees on some parts of deforested land in Nan and many other Thais planted trees elsewhere and also at home.

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 28/01/2016

» Angel child dolls, or luk thep in Thai, have become widely known since the middle of last year and increasingly popular, especially among those in the entertainment business who believe the dolls bring them good fortune. The trend for luk thep -- dolls with added spirits of angels that are believed to have the power to fulfill the wishes of their owners -- has become a centre of criticism since a number of owners treat their dolls as if they are real infants in public.

River temples by a free boat

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 30/07/2015

» It was both a sunny and rainy day in Nonthaburi province. Sprays of water were sprinkling our skin as a chartered boat whisked us down the Chao Phraya River around Koh Kret, an island where the descendants of Mon immigrants during the Thonburi period live and still maintain their Mon culture. Throughout this five-hour trip, we hopped on and off the boat to visit 10 temples on and around Koh Kret during the Nonthaburi Provincial Administration Organisation's annual boat excursion project. The PAO provides two free five-hour boat trips per day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays until the end of September. Temples on the list feature good examples of the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin periods' architecture, art and murals.

Preserving the ancient arts

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 22/10/2018

» One night in Khanom district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, 15-year-old Thanawit Kerddam brought out his best in performing a southern folk tale before numerous viewers. He provided the voices to more than 10 nang talung shadow puppets, sang along with fast-paced southern music, and occasionally slipped in jokes and current events. Although the audience from Bangkok did not understand the southern dialect, they felt the characters' emotions as the shadow puppets danced behind the white-cloth screen.
