    A social disease

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 24/09/2018

» One of my favourite actors recently left this world prematurely due to frail health caused by chronic excessive drinking. It is sad, because Warut Woratham, once the country's No.1 heartthrob, had managed to quit drinking and opted for a healthy lifestyle a few years prior to his death, but the alcohol-related damage to his health had been done. Warut was just 49 when he died.

    Nocturnal indulgence

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 12/05/2016

» Thailand is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations due to its beautiful attractions, diverse culture, ways of life, delicacies and, of course, shopping venues. Night markets are a form of flea markets. They have become popular over the past few years in Bangkok because their late hours, usually from 4pm to midnight, meet the demands of customers who want to shop after school and work. In addition, the bad economy and inflation have forced consumers to opt for cheaper goods from alternative sources.

Flagging up respect for the nation

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 15/02/2016

» Sometimes, our daily routine turns out to be an extraordinary thing for other people. So is the Thai people's daily practice to stand still and respect the national flag twice a day. Thai students must stand in front of the raised flag and sing the national anthem at 8am sharp every day. Whenever we hear the national anthem in public places, especially outdoors, we stop walking or doing other things and stand still to show our respect.

Animal rights should be human instinct

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 18/11/2014

» Day after day, I hear sad stories about tortured or abandoned animals and shed tears. With a weary heart, I have long hoped Thailand would pass a law to combat animal torture and ensure proper care for animals. Fortunately, the long fight for animal rights is almost over, as the draft law on animal protection passed all three readings by the National Legislative Assembly last week.

» Every second I have to sit in front of my computer I have to endure back pain and an ache in my right shoulder. Sometimes it gets so bad it feels as if these parts of my body are being pierced with a sharp knife. The pain has been with me for more than five years now. First, I simply assumed there was something wrong with my back. Later, I learned that the discomfort I regularly suffer is very common and is often classified under the catch-all term "office syndrome".

Saving man's best friend from the butchers

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 04/12/2012

» Hundreds of dogs crammed into tiny cages on trucks or boats travelling across the border and the Mekong River have been a common sight over the past few years. They were on their way to dog meat markets and restaurants in Vietnam via Laos.

    Laws of nature

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 08/11/2012

» Next year should be the beginning of less difficult times for all creatures in Thailand since the country's first law to prevent cruelty against animals and improve their welfare is expected to come out. After eight years of effort by activists and politicians, the Animal Welfare Bill passed the first parliamentary reading last month and has to be approved on the second and third readings before taking effect. The whole process usually takes no more than 180 days.
