» There was once a time in Thailand when the population was small and the waters were full of life. Today, the country has nearly 70 million people, but the number of marine creatures is decreasing all the time. In the past, people had respect for the seas, lakes, rivers and their inhabitants. We are not so conscientious anymore. There isn't enough concern about what our activities could mean for the future.

» Of Thailand's 25,000 female prisoners, 85% are there due to drug-related offences. Compared to other world prison populations, this percentage is inordinately high, as is that of the rising number of female inmates in relation to male inmates _ some 17% of Thailand's prison population is female. Many are arrested after becoming involved in the drug trade, used as tools by dealers. As young as 18, they are drawn into the wrong kind of company, their gullibility exploited. They tend to be girls with little education from poor families who are desperate for money.

» Nobody is happy to see a phra meru, or royal funeral pyre, being constructed at Sanam Luang, signifying as it does the death of a high-ranking member of the royal family. But the majestic ornate structures are nonetheless striking examples of Thai architecture and are the product of centuries of royal tradition and culture.
