Off the grid, in the sun

» The recently remodelled Away Koh Kood sits somewhere between jungle retreat and beachfront getaway. Forgoing outright luxury for rustic simplicity, the resort is best suited for those seeking relaxation rather than activity — the island is small, and there’s not much to do besides lounge, eat and snooze. Not that that’s a problem. Three room types are available, the best of the bunch being the Deluxe Oceanfront Bungalow, offering direct access to the beach. Spa treatments can be scheduled at the resort’s YanSpa, located on-site, meaning you’ll have everything you need to unwind within arm’s reach. For booking and rates, contact the resort directly.

    Five-star wanted level

» They pick me up at the airport in a brand-new hotel van. There is Wi-Fi, somehow, in the van. By the time we arrive at the Akyra Manor Chiang Mai, I am hooked. They attempt to drag me from the vehicle as I frantically Google “ways to stay in the van”. In the end, they are successful, and I am ever-grateful. Each floor of the 30-room property is represented by a black-and-white photograph of a celebrity. Brad Pitt is in the lobby. My 100m² Deluxe Suite on the fourth floor is watched over by eyes that peer from the genial crags of Michael Caine’s face. Dim, curtained hallways evoke the backstage atmosphere of a theatre.

    Get away, simply and organically

» The Aleenta Hua Hin Resort & Spa is not a new face in the hospitality game — its 26 rooms, nestled on a private beach (which is cleaned three times a day) in Pran Buri, about 30km outside of Hua Hin, have for 14 years been a mainstay for those seeking semi-reclusive getaways.
