» I dont understand why Thailand is not using the sun which is there 365 days/year. Can anybody tell me ? I am in the process of building a house but when it comes to solar energy i might have to import myself to only then be confronted with a high import tax on such products. And that while closing...

    • Anonymous commented : In California they grow a lot of rice. Rather than burn the rice husks, they bale them like hay bales, then use them in home construction at a pittance of cost. They are essentially rated at R56! Which means they insulate bigtime, as the walls of the homes are literally as thick as a bale, additionally they can be put up with a few friends in a weekend! Simple. Look up "hay bale houses". on Google. Also there is no waste and pollution by the burning. Janet

» Excellent idea my dear Rooster. I once heard of a farang on Koh Samui who built a detachable house - so when the Bangkok big-shots, who owned the land, decided to do that traditonal Thai scam of telling the farang to move off their land, hoping to get...

    • dilpickles commented : My bro & sister-n-law own 3 houseboats in Kanchanburi, they are fish framers, once a yr. the whole family goes there for a 3-5 day vacation. My bro-in-law is also the head of river management & enforces the laws of the river. They have been there for many yrs.. My wife said she thinks they pay about 2,000 THB a mo. for the use of the land where they are anchored to the shore. They have every modern convenience, solar cells on the roof,& pwr. lines running from the shore, catch basin & purifying sys. for rain water, satellite dish for TV, & ADSL. I have seen basic floor plans, or you could work with the builder & design your own. Depending on size they start at about $10,000 USD. I have seen houseboats that look as though they are farang owned or at-least farang designed. The in-laws are located around the river bend from the Phornphailan Riverside Resort, the house boats are even visible with Google earth. We normally stay at the resort as when the family is all there space is limited & being retired, & a city man, I love my creature comforts. We are either picked up from the shore by one of 4 long tails, or a 10 min walk. Houseboats rented by tourist, are towed to different tourist sites by long-tail, staying a day or 2 at a time. These seem to be pretty comfortable, with battery pwr. A/C, & a nice deck for hanging out outside There are no hi-powered boats, or even jet-ski's allowed. I have watched basic houseboat construction of bamboo for Thais with no amenities except those required by law, which besides a septic tank I don't know of. Most use solar pwr. LED lights at night, or have battery rigs. The question for me is could I live there. Have only seen Japanese tourist & only once 2 female farang missionaries in this area. In the next 2 yrs.[b:yybf14e1]We will have to make the decision of buying a house & where, but houseboat is & option, one much cheaper than house. [/b:yybf14e1]Next time up there will get more info, & report back if this thread is still alive.

    marriage in thailand

By Anonymous, Created on: 15/02/2008, Last updated on: 21/02/2008

» im canadian , how do we get married in thailand , and what is easy way to do it ?

    • Anonymous commented : This information is all over the Internet, Google it... A legal marriage in Thailand consists of both parties registering their marriage in person with the local Thai Amphur (Civil Registry Office). [ The United States does recognize the validity of such a marriage.] 1. Complete an affidavit at the Canadian Embassy, 15th Floor, Abdulrahim Place 990 Rama IV Road Bangrak, Bangkok 10500 Thailand The affidavit form, available upon request, includes all of the information required by relevant Thai law. The form must be completed and notarized at the Embassy. You may download a copy of the form here. 2. Have the notarized affidavit translated. Click here for a list of translators in the Bangkok area. 3. Take the affidavit and translation to: Legalization Division Department of Consular Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs 3rd Floor, 123 Chaeng Wattana Road Tung Song Hong, Laksi District, Bangkok Tel:(02) 575-1057-8, Fax:(02) 575-1054 4. Take the affidavit and supporting documents to a local Amphur and register yourselves as married. The Amphur will also require the following documents: Your Canadian passport If one party is Thai, the Thai citizen's identification card If either party is under the age of twenty, written permission from the parents (with Thai translation); If either you or your fiance have been previously married the Amphur will want to see proof that prior marriages have been terminated; either divorce or death certificates. These documents, if available, should be translated into Thai prior to presentation at the Amphur. Simple, and good luck, I hope he's a honey.

» We moved to this new house six months ago and everything is fine except for the noisy dogs next door. I spoke to the owner and asked if they could make their dogs quiet and she said it's not their dogs fault but the dog opposite who always stand outside their gate and make their dogs bark...how ridiculous!...

    • gipchimsa commented : I live in UK for the Summer and Bkk. in the Winter there. I am noise sensitive because my home in the UK is detached in a particulary quiet area. Bliss really, except for the dark, cold winter months. I always bring earplugs when coming to Thailand. The rubber ones are useless. Boots do a wax (I think) based product called Muffles. They have also just brought out new silicon earplugs. I find it more convenient for me to cut them in half and put a half in each ear. The muffles can be used more than once, many times, although the instructions are for one use only. Similar to disposable razors. The silicon last forever it seems. Of course you change them when they begin to get dirty, as is inevitable. Otherwise, an internet purchase can be done. A product called Joe's Earplugs (believe it) are particularly good and long lasting. However, these irritated my ears. Google: "wax earaplugs" For me there is no discomfort and I am sometimes half way through my coffee when I realise I am still wearing them. They are very useful for a quiet afternoon nap also.

    • MTT commented : I see Apple is suing Motorola over screen technology on their android system. The real target is Google, but the sales growth is faster for Android phones over the Apple. So the news guy said Apple might be getting concerned. Here we go again Apple will demand control over it's system and try to shut others out. But the others will figure it out and Apple will lose it's dominance once again. I know if the phones and the pads are similar and or better, I will certainly head for systems which give more control of file systems and don't reject flash and other search engines. What is wrong with that guy! Anybody have an Android system? Would be great to get say a Galaxy Android owner to debate a Galaxy Windows 7 owner when possible.

Airport rail MAP could help travelers

Google maps has yet to come up with this info. Any other sources??[/quote:1klb8ag2] The stations ARE marked on Google Maps but the icon is the same as regular railway station and you can see the station names at higher magnification though not marked as 'airport link'. You can see the stations and the elevated rail clearly in satellite image mode if you zoom in close enough. Practically, the City Line runs on top of the ground 'Eastern Rail Line' starting at PhayaThai BTS station and follow it down Makkasan then Petchburi Road toward HW 7/31 Chonburi New Line motor way. Don't bother with their 'map' page for reference (http://airportraillink.railway.co.th/en ... 1_map.html) The dweebs got some of the landmark completely backwards @! <update> So, now it's 2 weeks later and they had "fixed" the maps on the page I mentioned above. The locations are now correct and marked as 'airport link' in English on the new set of maps. But the rest of the landmarks, streets, and station names are all in Thai.....
