    Get smart?

» Last week Education Minister Chaturon Chaisaeng ordered officials to look into a report prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF) that showed the Thai educational system was potentially left behind at the bottom among eight Asean countries surveyed (to be fair, the WEF surveyed 144 countries around the world and in certain aspects of education we're doing better than others). Our dad, the Bangkok Post, reported later in the week that the minister vowed to embark on efforts to improve the education system and that his ministry will make education reform a national agenda.

» Ademonstration against a controversial dam project in Mae Wong National Park will start at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre tomorrow. The dam plan has been criticised for its lack of transparency, questionable effi ciency in preventing future fl ooding and its threat to irreplaceable trees and wildlife. To deputy PM Plodprasob Suraswadi, forests can be regrown and wildlife bred, but an online petition against the project on Change.org has garnered over 113,401 signatures, becoming the biggest campaign of its kind in Asia (who knew that Thais are such environmentalists?!).

» This year’s Halloween falls on Thursday (Oct 31), and we have already been celebrating by sending LINE Halloween stickers to friends for weeks now. Such antics have gotten us thinking about certain scary beings that have become synonymous with the day. For our own entertainment (and hopefully yours too), we compare six well-known Thai ghosts based on six criteria to find the ultimate mascot for Thai Halloween. Use our picks to inspire your costume, or just continue to be amused by the local fascination with spirits.

» Some ordinary objects that have a straightforward use elsewhere in the world seem to have more application or deeper meaning through Thai eyes. This week we search for ordinary objects with extraordinary uses in Thailand.

    Spice of life

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 06/09/2013

» Thailand has received so many influences from India, from Buddhism to Hinduism, language, literature as well as food. Your khao mok kai is inspired by biryani rice. Many types of "Thai" curries such as gaeng karee (yellow curry), panaeng and massaman also have Indian roots. Yet, for some reason, whether because it's too heavy or the tastes aren't compatible, real Indian food isn't what Thai people eat every day (no, your roti drenched in condensed milk and green curry naan don't count).

    Dine refine

» Recently opened, Aston aims to define expectations you have for a restaurant from the first moment you lay eyes on it. The sign that bears the venue's name is rusty. Vines and foliage creep on a net in front of the building as if there's no sign of human existence. The bare cement building appears as if it has been lightly torched with a mini atomic bomb. That being said, the venue doesn't appear run-down but rather post-apocalyptic chic. However, it may not look too inviting to some dainty khun noos. Don't be scared.

    Silver linings

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 27/09/2013

» THE SET-UP: The location is a bit weird as the restaurant is on the top of an office building but the "angels" (aka the receptionists) on the ground floor will look after you. Once upstairs, past the floors which presumably see employees waltzing around in fuzzy slippers all day, you'll feel just as comfortable at Cloud 47. The venue offers a vast open-air dining area that is partially roofed and a smaller two-storey indoor area with a wine cellar. Playing off its altitude and cloud theme, the decor is dominated with white but isn't lifeless as some LEDs light things up with their changing colours, creating a mesmerising mood. You're likely to meet salary people from nearby offices looking to relax after work.
