Challenges of a post-virus recovery

Oped, Pavida Pananond, Published on 22/05/2020

» Picking up the pieces and preparing for the future after the economic and social ravages wrought by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic cannot start soon enough. For Thailand and Southeast Asia more broadly, pre-pandemic imperatives of economic upgrading for higher value-added jobs and industries are now compounded by new Covid-induced dilemmas of rising unemployment and labour abundance. Addressing this double whammy of economic challenges requires policy responses that are nuanced, fair and forward-looking in trying to achieve multiple objectives after the virus subsides.

Education overhaul

Oped, Postbag, Published on 22/05/2020

» I agree with Khun Vint Chavala in his May 20 letter that "The Prayut Chan-o-cha government should stop dragging its feet in reforming the education system, so education can be served in an equitable manner."

OPINION

Steep online learning curve

Oped, Editorial, Published on 20/05/2020

» The government's remote learning project has provided a valuable lesson -- all those involved still face a steep learning curve when it comes to this particular subject.

OPINION

No room for complacency

Oped, Editorial, Published on 19/05/2020

» Sunday saw Thailand ease some of its lockdown measures further in order to revive the economy. Among those businesses allowed to resume operations were department stores and some activities in sports centres. The Prayut Chan-o-cha government also rolled out the Thai Chana website and QR code system as a preventive measure to track people in case of infection.

Keep govt out of 'Happiness Cupboards'

Oped, Wasant Techawongtham, Published on 16/05/2020

» A "drama" has been playing out on social media surrounding a well-intentioned, popularly initiated scheme to help the poor. But it could do more for Thai society than meets the eye.

OPINION

Virus risks versus economic imperatives

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 08/05/2020

» The coronavirus pandemic requires responding governments to be agile and quick on their feet, learning by doing and constantly reevaluating their policy mix. What was needed a month or two ago may need to be recalibrated this week for the immediate future in a moving balance of risks and objectives. For Thailand, the balance between public health safety and economic reality has been lost. The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) risks becoming a victim of its own success. This means the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha should now be listening to economists and social workers a little more than epidemiologists and medical doctors as Thailand's virus-fighting priorities shift with twists and turns.

OPINION

Is Thailand ready for schools to teach remotely?

Oped, Bundit Kertbundit, Published on 08/05/2020

» In the wake of Covid-19, institutes of learning by the dozens have sealed their doors to shelter students from the disease. In the tally recorded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, as many as 193 countries locked down schools nationwide, unnerving almost 1.6 billion learners or 91% of the global student population.

OPINION

Projecting a sensible Covid-19 battle

Oped, Dio Herdiawan Tobing & Prayoga Permana, Published on 30/04/2020

» Covid-19 has put the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to the test. Singapore experiences a second wave of infection, and some countries remain as virus hotspots amid concerns that they may have turned into the next Covid-19 epicentre. This issue was picked up extensively within the diplomatic community across the region. A key takeaway from the spread of Covid-19 is the need for member countries to solidify intra-Asean initiatives by strengthening result-based diplomacy. Member states should pick up this momentum to bring Asean closer to citizens.
