Rainy-Season Struggles Only Bangkokians Understand

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/07/2018

» The monsoon season not only brings heavy rain showers but also makes your Bangkok life a tad more difficult. Not sure what I'm getting at? Read on and see if you agree (and commiserate) with me.

Ready, set, halt

» Inspired by the whines, moans and groans about BTS delays this week, here are a few points to note before considering "the fastest mode of transport" in town.

Spilling the Tea

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/06/2018

» Remember when bubble tea was all the rage in Bangkok? There's another ongoing trend hidden in tea shops' menus that you may not be aware of, namely, cheese tea. Accordingly to a 2017 article by Condé Nast Traveler, cheese tea started from street stalls in Taiwan and later become so popular in China that people queued up for hours to sip it. And it has been a thing in Bangkok for some time now -- since around late last year, to my best knowledge -- and Ditto Modern Tea on the second floor of CentralWorld is one of such shops that offers this curious concoction, and more.

All Tea No Shade

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/06/2018

» Earlier this week, you must have treated yourself to a newly penned poem by PM Prayut Chan-o-cha entitled Pracharat Thai Niyom, which I humbly translate to "people-state partnership and Thai way". With an important-sounding name like that, the poem's purpose is to inspire Thais to improve themselves and the country.

11 Things to Say If Caught Sleeping on Your Job

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/06/2018

» Earlier this week, pictures of two members of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) caught catching 40 winks, during a meeting to pass the 3-trillion-baht budget, were wildly circulated and ridiculed online. In their defence, the sleeping members said their snoozing was due to health conditions.

Sacred Figures Thai Mediums Should Channel Next

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/06/2018

» Unless you've been living under a rock (or just back from a meditation retreat), you can't really avoid news or posts regarding khon song jao (mediums) on your news feed. These people claim to be able to channel Hindu deities, past Thai kings (uh-oh, 112), characters from classic Thai literature and Doraemon.

Food in mini forest

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/06/2018

» Contrary to its name, GISMO isn't techie, futuristic or gimmicky in any way. Instead, it's a low-key dining spot with a relaxed and welcoming ambience. You'll be sitting in a rustic warehouselike space with high ceiling and exposed beams. The floor-to-ceiling windows with thin frames amply allow in natural light to brighten up the place while pops of flora and leaves add life and softness to the space. Most of the plants are artificial but have a soothing effect on you nonetheless, making the space a little forest in the city. There weren't much to distract you from what's on the plate as the only background music is the fountain's trickling.

The art of poking fun

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/06/2018

» Tanawat "Pop" Prakammanu, 26, works as a graphic designer at an advertising agency in Bangkok and runs his Facebook page Prakammanu (fb.com/Prakammanu), where he showcases his drawings in his spare time. He went viral after publishing an action-filled Avengers-inspired comic with a cast full of figures in Thai politics from PM Prayut Chan-o-cha to student activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal. Pop poked fun at them with sharp humour (even though he insists he's a casual observer) and witty dialogues. His latest effort has been shared more than 100,000 times. His page isn't the first to poke fun at Thai politics but we think it's definitely worth checking out especially if you want to see Uncle Tu having a fist-fight with Thaksin Shinawatra. We talked to Pop about his serious art of poking fun but at, his request, no serious political comment.

Work Fails

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/05/2018

» Like personal days, we're all entitled to a few work blunders. You may spill coffee on your desk or send the latest office gossip to the wrong LINE group. (Guilty!) If you're having a bad day at the office, I would like to remind you that you're a mere mortal with his/her flaws and you'll learn from your mistakes, get better and thrive and so on. (We've all read the inspirational quotes on FB and IG)
