Thai Proverbs: 2019 Edition

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/02/2019

» New words and verbal expressions are born every day yet our classic proverbs remain unchanged with references that are dated or we can no longer relate to. I’ll say it’s time to give classic proverbs a makeover with contemporary references. Some meanings are changed, by the way. Shall we give this a try?

PM's tracklist vol. 2

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/01/2019

» In the midst of the smog and air pollution updates that have shrouded your news feed lately, you may have missed the recent release of PM Prayut Chan-o-cha's latest single titled In Memory. This is the seventh addition to his repertoire following Return Happiness To Thailand (Jun 2014), Because You're Thailand (Dec 2015), Hope & Faith (Oct 2016), Bridge (Dec 2017), Diamond Heart (Feb 2018) and Fight For The Land (Apr 2018).

Into the fog with memes

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 18/01/2019

» I'm sure you're painfully aware of the smog that blankets Bangkok and its adjoining provinces (through your nose, eyes and throats), and have already learned from the experts on how to protect yourself from the harmful effects of PM2.5 particulate matter that has shrouded our city. There's no point in shedding anymore light on these topics, so here I offer another kind of relief -- humour through a few smog-inspired memes to get you through these foggy days. Take a deep breath (while wearing an N95 mask) people, this too shall pass.

» Refill Station (fb.com/refillstationbkk) is the brainchild of Supatchaya "Ann" Techachoochert, alternative energy engineer Chanin "Nammon" Srisuman and co-founder of Better Moon cafe Papawee "Pear" Pongthanavaranon. Ann, who studied biology for her doctorate degree and writes for green-living website Greenery (www.greenery.org), told us how they trail-blazed the zero-waste movement and are tackling the plastic waste issue in Thailand through their unique service, which recently turned one.

A Uniformed Presence

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 11/01/2019

» Should schools still impose uniform on students? Earlier this week, pictures of students at Bangkok Christian College wearing their choices of attire to school were widely spread online. Kudos to the school for trying out a new approach to encourage student creativity and self-expression. Special shout out to the boy who wore Rillakuma onesie and the other one with a turban.

» Iconsiam gives city slickers plenty of reasons to cross the Chao Phraya River. Besides its retail extravaganza of well-known brands and architectural wonders and art, Iconsiam's dining options across seven zones are impressive, too. I ate my way through them to give you some highlights.

Back to the Grind

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 04/01/2019

» There is already a lot of sound advice on how to prepare yourself for going back to work after a long holiday. I, too, want to help ease your (and my) post-vacation blues in my own way by reminding you of the good things to come this year.

'Tis the season to give

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/12/2018

» Christmas Day is just a couple of days away. While Santa is coming to town and you're unsure if you're on his naughty or nice list, there are many kind activities in Bangkok you can do to ensure you'll be in his good graces. Instead of spelling them out, I decide to turn them into a little fun game inspired by Monopoly. May the nicest person win!
