The gourmet dinner menu and fine wines

    Life, Published on 09/10/2015

» For the eighth edition of the Bangkok Post Charity Wine Dinner on Nov 5 at New York Steakhouse, JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok, executive chef Michael Hogan and his team have crafted a seven-course "Discovering British Beef" gourmet dinner menu, using imported fine food products. Each course will be accompanied by fine wines from France, Italy and New Zealand supported by Italasia and carefully selected by Jean David Spira, the hotel's assistant director of food and beverage operations. From canapés to starters and main courses to desserts, here is the menu and wines that guests can look forward to:

    Unleash your inner cannibal

» The Walking Dead Cafe -- the brainchild of Fox Thai and Neue Space Cafe -- opened last week to mark the upcoming sixth season of the popular AMC zombie series. The pop-up space is decorated in a way best described as "apocalyptic chic" or "stylishly shambling". Oil barrels and wooden crates are used as furniture (what else would you expect from a zombie-infested world?) while the menu is inspired by the undead themselves. While the concept is quite cool, the F&B is unfortunately less so.

» Romantic, philanthropic and groundbreaking -- the Bangkok Post Foundation, together with JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok, promises to yet again be the talk of the town with its eighth edition of the annual charity wine dinner that this year introduces the city's dining scene to glorious British beef. Yes, you read that right, British beef.

Oh, you'll scream for it, all right

» Boca Scoop was a surprise -- and perhaps a curse -- appearing about two months ago, seemingly overnight, just across the street from this Guru writer's gym. Since its opening, he has been going at least thrice weekly to gorge on its house-made ice cream, which is easily among the best in Bangkok. Indeed, Boca Scoop is an oddity, located in the far reaches of Udom Suk, between sois 51 and 53, in an open-fronted shophouse with corrugated tin walls painted in bright, block colours. Nevertheless, it is a welcome addition to a neighbourhood that is on the verge of "up and coming".

Clean, lean and everything in between

» As a person who follows the self-sprinkled mantra of I-will-eat-whatever-the-hell-I-want, I have never been one to obsess over what I put into my mouth. If I want a cookie at midnight, with a side of chips, I am going to go stuff my face -- sans any guilt or calorie-counting. My heaven-sent gift of rapid-fire digestion is a side effect of being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism -- something that has unfortunately been slowing down since I have plummeted deeper into adulthood.

    Flavours to live by

» They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and who can argue with that statement when you're living in a country like Thailand? We're a food-obsessed breed, submerged in a culture that asks "Have you eaten?" instead of "How are you?", and where asking for seconds can only result in favouritism from the cook or the host of dinner party. Baan is the latest addition to Thitid Tassanakajohn's (better known as Chef Ton) growing portfolio of successful restaurants, which also includes Le Du and Taper. Baan's unfussed name was chosen to reflect the restaurant's concept of family recipes we've grown up with and love, with classic flavours that take us back to our grandparent's dining table. The decor is simple yet comforting -- marble and a monotone colour scheme are persistent throughout the cosy restaurant, with additions of warm tones from wood panels. Lunchtime here offers a quieter and more casual dining experience, whereas dinner time is where Baan revs up the pace with a bustling yet sophisticated ambience.

    New clothes for Indian cabs

Guru, Napamon Roongwitoo, Published on 09/10/2015

» Bangkok has long prided itself on the vibrancy of its taxis -- they make the roads look like someone has spilled a giant bag of M&M's. But are we the only city with colourful cabs? Apparently not.
