Final curtain call

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/11/2018

» For nearly 50 years, the Dusit Thani Bangkok has welcomed the likes of royalty, dignitaries, celebrities and common folk. From the late US president Ronald Reagan to singer Enrique Iglesias to an inconsequential magazine writer like me, the hotel has had a rich history. But despite its age, it's looking good and isn't slowing down at all, even if it is closing its doors in early January. Sure, it's only temporary but it's closing for a pretty sizeable amount of time -- at least three and a half years. However, does that mean there's nothing at the Dusit Thani except for weathered walls, an aged building and an establishment that's on its way out? Nothing could be farther from the truth.

P is for pancake and party

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 16/11/2018

» Pancakes are a breakfast favourite for a lot of people and they're just hands-down pretty dang delicious and awesome (if you're a pancake hater... uh, why?). But aside from that, they've also become a starting point for friendships and bonds to be made thanks to Robin Vogelaar. For the past few years, Vogelaar has travelled around the world and hosted events in different countries with a simple premise: he cooks Dutch pancakes, people meet up and eat, and have a good time. It's a simple thing yet it has gotten the attention of others that Vogelaar was able to take the TEDx stage at Abidjian, Côte d'Ivoire. On November 24, he's bringing the Dutch Pancake Party to the Big Mango. Guru spoke to him on everything pancake party.

Soul food

» Caribbean cuisine is a rare find in the Big Mango but the arrival of Jamaican Eatz is making it a little more available to us Bangkokians. Established by two New Yorkers who found themselves missing it, they took matters into their own hands and established Jamaican Eatz. For a year, they did wholesale, selling pies to different shops and restos, but it was only a month ago that they put up a stall at W District in Phra Khanong.

Juicy patties and cheesy macs

» Papa's Kitchen has a number of restos scattered around Bangkok. Their first store at Phattanakan is still going strong and they've got another in Bang Kapi. Their latest one, however, is a little different from the rest.

Dine for a cause

» What's better than a meal? A meal that creates social impact. Never thought your choice of a snack, lunch or dinner can be for a good cause? You just haven't looked hard enough, dear readers.

Sexy looks and pure sound

» Wireless is where everything is headed nowadays which kinda proves Apple made the right move doing away with the headphone jack on their phones (although it should be noted I am begrudgingly admitting that). Obviously, it's not just headphones people are trying to become wireless but within the realm of music, speakers are also shifting to become untethered. It's a little ironic because in way it brings back that classic boombox portability so you can have your own little recreation of that iconic John Cusack scene from Say Anything. There's a wide variety of wireless speakers on the market now, but Vifa is aiming to cater to the high-end market. While high-end does mean costing more dough, the questions remains whether these speakers are worth your dime.

Don't look down!

» The Big Mango is home to a beautiful skyline and a number of towering skyscrapers. A casual walk along Sukhumvit or Sathon and a glance upwards will prove this to be true, but towering behemoths aren't enough these days. The latest trend are skywalks and high-elevated walkways -- clear glass-bottomed floors that give you an unhindered sight of the many, many feet below, turn your legs to jelly and make your stomach turn. Of course, many are braving these side effects for the sake of a great photo and IG post. Are you willing to take on these heights for 'Gram? Pick one of the five or visit all and test your mettle.

What's next on Netflix

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 14/12/2018

» Netflix has taken over all of our lives and we've sat back and welcomed it. "Netflix and chill" is now meant in the literal sense rather than being used as a euphemism back in the day i.e. a year or so ago. With the recent boom of the streaming service, it's no surprise that they show no signs of stopping. Having released a huge amount of new content this year, they also announced exciting releases for 2019 at the "What's Next" event at Singapore recently, with series from Thailand, too.

The artist who describes himself as a "child of the internet era" brings his analogue/digital imagery to Thailand with an art installation at Siam Center.
