Posh Pattaya

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 02/08/2019

» You'll feel like a VIP upon your arrival at Cape Dara Resort, Pattaya. Not only guests are referred to by the hospitable staff as khun than (a politer form of khun) but also be treated to other perks during their stay. If you stay in a suite and higher type, you'll be greeted by a GRO, that is guest relations officer, who will accompany you to the 37th floor where Dara Club Lounge is located. You should definitely be spending a lot of time there during your stay as you can reap many benefits from it. But before I go into detail on VIP treatments, let's talk overall impression of Cape Dara first.

Reading Between the Words

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/07/2019

» Sometimes when you read Thai news stories, you may come across certain phrases or words that show up again and again. They are often terms that mask something that's less pleasant or perhaps too blunt to be said outright.

From a new upscale dining destination to a low-key night market in the city centre, here are five new and upcoming venues that are worth braving the rain for.

» By now, you probably have seen the lineup of new Cabinet under PM Prayut Chan-o-cha. And whether it fills you with delight or dread, this is our Cabinet now. To mark the official arrival of the new government, I've decided to meme out complicated reaction that I (and many others) have. Let's see if you share the same sentiment.

The Land of Double Standards?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/07/2019

» While Thailand is forever known as The Land of Smiles, the real locals (who like to keep it real) can come up with an ironic take on the famous notion. The Land of Double Standards springs to mind, thanks to recent developments (or lack thereof) in Thai politics. Check out the table below to see if you agree with me.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/06/2019

» This Sunday is Social Media Day and you can read more about it in our cover story. Given millions of social media users in Thailand (and the fact that everyone seems to be glued to their phone screens), why hasn't this day become a thing here already? To celebrate the day, I've come up with a checklist to help you figure whether you're addicted to social media or not.

One on one with Eleven

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/06/2019

» A bazillion of suspicious rats. More of Eleven's nose bleeding and superpower. Mike smooching El. Will's ongoing connection to The Upside Down. Something that caused Dustin to go, "Holy Mother of God". A new mall where you have fun and also hide from monsters (as you do). And Billy's mullet. These are just some of the strange things coming to Hawkins in the third season of Stranger Things. (see what I did?)

P(l)aying Respect

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/06/2019

» You should be well aware by now of the online brouhaha regarding phan wai khru, pedestal trays with flower arrangement, that come with a creative/political statement. The students usually offer these trays to the teachers as tokens of appreciation and respect on Wan Wai Khru (unofficially translates to Paying-Respect-to-Teachers Day) at schools. And they usually come decked out in a traditional style with specific types of flowers, which have beautiful meanings behind them.
