Every coup has a silver lining

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 13/06/2014

» It has been about three weeks since our military overlords took over the country in the May 22 coup. Despite some valiant efforts by the army to repay rice farmers money owed to them, a plan to revise various state projects, and the military junta chief using an hour of his precious time to pen the sappy song “Returning Happiness to the People”, there still seems to be some confusion over what sort of real reform will actually be achieved.

    From Pla ra to Prada

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/06/2014

» A true Bangkokian would have already been to Central Embassy by now (and studied the fancy control panel of its toilets). For a mall that houses Chanel, Gucci and Hermes, it may come as a surprise that it does offer a food court, albeit a slicker-than-average one with Eathai. Featuring four zones, Street Food is dedicated to selected stalls, Krua 4 Pak offers regional food from outlets of well-known restaurants, Talad Eathai has snacks, cooking ingredients, spa and souvenir products, and Issaya Cooking Studio doubles as a cooking school and the kitchen of Issaya-Patisserie, which is on the fifth level. Like FoodLoft, you’ll be handed a ticket to be used within the 5,000-sqm area of Eathai and charged on your way out. Unlike your standard food court where you eat inches away from others, Krua 4 Pak offers a spacious and airy feel, thanks to the large windows and high ceiling. It is divided into four zones, according to Thai culinary regions. Each zone is nicely decorated to reflect each region. You can sit underneath big umbrellas at the northern zone, for instance. The crowd we saw during our visit was mostly Thais.

    Muscles and melody

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/06/2014

» WHO is the latest boy band to become a hit in the Thai music scene despite their zero singing output. In the absence of vocals, they make up for it with lip-synching, muscular bodies and seductive dance moves. The band comprises of fitness trainer Somyos “Took” Chaiphra-in, pharmacist Surat “Himpz” Phatthanajareet and tae kwon do instructor Assanai “Liw” Yungyuen. The music video for their first single “Chan Lor Pai” (I’m Too Good-Looking) went viral, garnered them fans, and inspired many cover-dance videos. They had a meet-and-greet last week (Jun 7) and will have a concert later this month. Check them out at fb.com/WHOBoyBand or Instagram: @whoboyband.

    Flavour factory

    Guru, Published on 13/06/2014

» It may sound like a hole-in-the-wall after-hours operation, but don’t be fooled by either the name or its franchised nature. The Great Kabab Factory indeed may live up to its confident usage of the adjective “great”, delivering a swathe of spices and flavours. In many Western eyes, the kabab is assumed in doner form or shawarma, to be shovelled down often on the go, more often late at night, most often after many drinks. But the Factory in question here is at the other end of the spectrum. It’s housed in the street-facing front room of the Majestic Grand Hotel. Formerly Italian restaurant Sak, the slightly curious location features a high ceiling that affords it plenty of light. There’s enough room for 70 diners and it would suit an Indian wedding banquet more than a room of discerning Thong Lor foodies, but maybe that’s what it’s about. The emphasis here is on the food and service, with 90 per cent of the staff hand-picked from India as thoroughly as the spices themselves, it seems. A feature of the place is the open kitchen where you can observe the chefs prepare the kababs and bread with flair.
