Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/06/2019

» You should be well aware by now of the online brouhaha regarding phan wai khru, pedestal trays with flower arrangement, that come with a creative/political statement. The students usually offer these trays to the teachers as tokens of appreciation and respect on Wan Wai Khru (unofficially translates to Paying-Respect-to-Teachers Day) at schools. And they usually come decked out in a traditional style with specific types of flowers, which have beautiful meanings behind them.

Don't Let Rain Ruin Your Parade

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 14/06/2019

» Cough, cough. Sorry, dear readers, I haven't been my peachy self, thanks to the recent rains. As you may already be well aware of (or wet), the rainy season is now in session. It'll last until the middle of October, according to the Thai Meteorological Department. Instead of complaining about how the downpour makes Bangkok life a bit more difficult, I would like to offer some relief in the form of memes so you can brave the wet season with some 555.

Awkward Advertisements

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 07/06/2019

» When you think of any form of advertisement, you probably think of a long process that involves many people until a final decision is reached. And if anything that can cause controversy or mixed message is spotted, someone would probably be like, "Hey, I think the public would object to this" or "Guys, let's not do blackface to sell charcoal doughnuts. It's very unnecessary."

Thai Proverbs: 2019 Version

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/05/2019

» New words get coined all the time. So why can't our good old sayings be updated to the present? Classic Thai proverbs often refer to things we see or use every day but some proverbs have become outdated or unrelatable. For example, "While water rises, quickly store it." Do most people still fill their buckets with water from the river and store it in earthen jars at home? I don't think so. Therefore, here are a few suggestions of updated Thai proverbs along with new references that people can relate to, for your consideration.

No Kiddin' Around

» While some hotels have kid-friendly facilities as an afterthought, Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort and Spa takes providing fun for little guests seriously. They aren't kidding around with the introduction of Siam Adventure Club, which affords kids (and kids at heart) plenty of activities to enjoy throughout the day.

Thai Logic Versus Logic

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 10/05/2019

» Oftentimes, the adjective unique is used to describe various aspects of Thai society and culture. One uniqueness I think hasn't been talked about enough is the fact that some Thais seem to operate on a unique set of logic as well. Not sure what I'm getting at? Well, check out the table below and see if you agree with me.
