» A stealthy order signed last month by the Minister of Education has brought unnecessary attention and divisive policies back to the deep South. The minister, Teerakiat Jareonsettasin, published in the Royal Gazette a new ruling on student dress which in essence, allows administrators of schools located on Buddhist temple land to decide if they will ban the use of the Muslim hijab headdress by girls.

» The director of a school in Pattani province in the deep South has re-ignited an issue that many thought was settled 30 years ago. He has banned the wearing of the Muslim head scarf, the hijab, at the large and respected Anuban Pattani School. The order is clearly illegal and a violation of Ministry of Education regulations, as well as the constitutional rights of the students.

» The Prayut Chan-o-cha government has missed a golden opportunity in the first six weeks of this year. It should have just announced it has dropped all plans and studies to build coal-fired power plants in Krabi and Songkhla in the South rather than invoke yet another delay, which gives the impression of weakness and indecision.

» The orchestrated "surrender" of nearly 300 men in Pattani last week is getting a rough reaction from some critics. They label it either a sham that means nothing or a misguided amnesty to admitted terrorists. The critics are wrong and the commander of the 4th Army commander is right. The welcoming "Bring People Home" ceremony won't end the southern insurgency and isn't meant to immediately bring peace. It's a true indication of the extremely difficult tasks at hand.
