Butterflies and solitude

» The opening of 100 Tonson Gallery's "Chatchai Puipia: Sites Of Solitude. Still-Life, Self-Portraiture, And The Living Archive" last month seemed to have been an unmissable event for every prominent figure in the Bangkok art scene, except for Chatchai himself. It's not that there was something urgent he had to attend to; he had no intention of going, not when the show was being set up, nor when it was running.

» By the haystack next to a rice field, Yothin Kijbai sung out in high-pitched, rhyming Isan verses that he apparently knew by heart. Dressed in a light blue costume adorned with glittering sequins, the 68-old-year is not a madman but a well-known "comedy molam".

» More than anything, Filipino artist Louie Cordero's paintings at Bangkok University Gallery's (BUG) current show, "Golden Rule", are fun. On the floor, traces of spilled paint are still visible — as BUG's artist-in-residence, the gallery's second floor was used as Cordero's studio.

Going at it alone

» Last year, as part of Thonglor Art Space's "The Other Room: Exploring The Other's Life" in which more than 20 visual and performing artists participated, dance artist Vidura Amranand, dressed in a negligee, invited the audience into a bedroom-like set and delivered a short session of fetishist, dance-like hand and body movements. In Saifah Tanthana's The Last Schomburk's Deer, which also played last year, she moved sensually onstage with actor Wachara Kanha in a tug-of-war of sex and power.

» It's a real shame that works by Dutch artist Daan Botlek in "Inhabited Hypercube" were only displayed for a week at Cho Why gallery in Chinatown. Yet, that was a happy sign that curator Myrtille Tibayrenc's Toot Yung Gallery, who organised the exhibition as their first nomad project after her space closed down in Ekamai last year, is very much alive and doing rather well.

» Last year was a quiet for musicals in Bangkok. This year, however, we have already seen two musical productions, from a small adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion at Thonglor Art Space to the original Broadway musical Beauty And The Beast earlier this month. This week alone, there are two more productions, from veteran Yuthtana Lopanpaibul's Thai version of The Sound Of Music opening tomorrow at Muangthai Rachadalai Theatre, to, beginning on Saturday, a stage adaptation by Teravat Anuvatudom of the 2004 film Hom Rong (The Overture), the debut performance at KBank Siam Pic-Ganesha, Siam Square One.

» Prasert Yodkaew's angel wings are made of a plug, a Chinese spoon, a bidet spray, a used toothbrush, a plastic fork, an amulet, nuts and bolts and some wires wrapped roughly in plastic cover.

» The opening of WTF Gallery's current exhibition "Monday 2 Monday" earlier this month might have been missed by a few. That could partly be explained by the exhibition's title and the fact that the opening was actually on a Friday. In addition, the gallery is closed on Mondays. But this is all beside the point.
