    Northern Explorations

News, Gary Boyle, Published on 26/12/2014

» Famed explorer Sir Edmund Hillary racked up a fair amount of frequent flyer miles in his life of adventuring. He was the first man to stand atop Mount Everest, and the first to score the hat-trick of doing Everest and both the North and South Poles. His 1953 expedition to conquer the world's highest mountain was done wearing just a thin cotton and nylon jacket and carrying a scant 20 kilograms of supplies.

    The Thrill of the Grill

    News, Published on 26/12/2014

» Though no actual glowing embers or flaming yuletide logs are in evidence upon entering the Fireplace Grill at the InterContinental Bangkok on Phloen Chit Rd., there is an undeniable warmth that pervades the simple, uncluttered and elegantly understated dining room. Softly earth toned fabrics and natural wood surfaces play off gleaming steel countertops, grills and copper cooking pots housed neatly within the centrally placed, open-plan cooking plaza.

» Well, Guru has somehow made it to our last issue of 2014. The year has been a blur of procrastinating by sleeping under our desks, copious amounts of vodka, and lots of grammatical mistakes – but hey, we hope you were mildly entertained and that your birds enjoyed having our pages line their cages.

    Killer kebabs

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/12/2014

» Charcoal is no ordinary Indian restaurant. First of all, they don't serve curry. Secondly, kebabs are the king of the menu. Thirdly, you can have your skewers with creative cocktails too. Positioning itself as a kebab specialist, the brand new restaurant offers something different to Bangkok's dining scene. The impressive decor has an industrial feel with subtle and playful Indian touches. The moment the elevator door opens you can't miss the many pieces of perforated orange aluminium squares that are lit up from underneath. They move in conjunction with electric fans that blow up some wind, mimicking fire. The men's toilet is equipped with sounds and signs found at authentic Indian markets (we can't speak for the women's bathroom because our male reviewer didn't want to be branded a perve). Look up to the very high ceiling and you should notice that it's covered with a screen pattern found at mosques. Outdoor seats are positioned next to the swimming pool with a view of the city beyond. There are many other details, from placemats to aprons, but you should experience it yourself. Suffice to say, a serious amount of attention has gone into creating a memorable atmosphere and it pays off.
