Bangkok bold

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 30/03/2018

» Bangkok is more than just cute cafes, endless malls, rooftop bars and boutique hotels. In a country that lies within the conservative spectrum, few can only go so far as to push boundaries. The sunny side

Guru, Nianne-Lynn Hendricks, Published on 30/03/2018

» Sandwiched between a craft beer bar and hostel, and a closed shophouse almost on the corner of Ekamai 12, Broken Eggs has a sunny disposition. Its small porch has tables for those who like to light up and big French windows gives you a glimpse of the inside, a casual wood and steel setting, comprising a mix of high tables and normal tables and seating at the big bar. A street vendor's food cart parked in the front is what chef Jacobo Astray Tudela uses when Broken Eggs serves up tapas at the various food events around town, and is a homage to its days at W District, where it all began.

» Amid the deluge of headlines that pop up on my (and perhaps your) smartphone screen, a few manage to catch my attention with their unexpected funniness especially those regarding Thai politics. Some are so ironic, they are jokes. Not sure what I'm getting at? Here are a few examples for your entertainment. After reading too many corruption scandals involving state officials, one just needs a few laughs, y'know.

All Roads Lead to Romain

» If you saw him walking down the street, you'd think he's your typical working farang living in the Big Mango. But Romain Guiot is a chef in a restaurant that he owns, the co-owner of an art gallery/tattoo shop/bar, and a distributor of a German spray paint product and he's only been living in Bangkok for four years. Not surprisingly, he studied French cuisine, fine arts and mechanical engineering to work on wind turbines back in Europe before deciding to travel around Southeast Asia and finally settling in Bangkok, where he also had a brief stint teaching yoga. He's cooking up new ventures so Guru caught up with him to talk about his restaurant, Outlaw Creative Cuisine, and Maison Close, the art gallery/tattoo shop/bar, and future projects.
