Talking Trash

Guru, Pim-orn Supavarasuwat, Published on 29/06/2018

» Conservationist and activist Sakdadech Sudsawang was the main man behind the Thai chapter of Trash Hero, an international non-profit organisation that gathers volunteers to pick up trash and clean-up communities. He recently co-founded conservation organisation Mahasamut Patrol Thailand (goo.gl/D6CpS7), which aims to tackle trash in Thai seas and its dangers to marine life. With the recent spat of reports on our oceanic friends dying from swallowing plastic trash, we spoke to Sakdadech about his project and what we can do to help.

No FIFA FOMO

» We are smack in the middle of the World Cup, and unlike Americans who use phrases like "World Series" or "World Champions" despite having only American participants, the majority of the world is actually involved in this tournament. There's only about two weeks left, but there are a lot of matches to watch and a whole lot of World Cup to keep you going. Fortunately, Bangkok is high on the World Cup fever, and we've got a number of places you can visit to keep that high.

Oriental simplicity

» On the 27th floor of 137 Pillars, Nimitr Restaurant is adorned beautifully in a regal dark blue that makes the entire place shine and shimmer. Add the high ceiling with modern lights and a fantastic view and you've got yourself a pretty snazzy and hip dining venue for lunch or dinner. Fancy dining in the open air? You can head out to the balcony where they've also got a bar. At first glance, you may think the place is a little swanky and that you're entering a high-class dining restaurant. Despite the feeling of sophistication the place brings up, Nimitr is not a hi-so dining establishment and actually wants you to sit back, relax and enjoy your meal. Besides, who would complain about having such a pretty place to dine in? It just means a lot of IG-worthy opportunities.

All Tea No Shade

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/06/2018

» Earlier this week, you must have treated yourself to a newly penned poem by PM Prayut Chan-o-cha entitled Pracharat Thai Niyom, which I humbly translate to "people-state partnership and Thai way". With an important-sounding name like that, the poem's purpose is to inspire Thais to improve themselves and the country.

From seedling to bar

» MarkRin Chocolate was born out of the love for chocolate by Assoc Prof Dr Sanh and his wife Kanokked "Thip" La-Ongsri, who also created it as a long-term research project in Chiang Mai. Sanh found that the agricultural geography of Thailand qualified for planting cacao trees. The first cacao plant in Chiang Mai, Sanh crossed two cacao varieties and created his own hybrid called "I.M.1". He and Thip formed MarkRin Farms, to support and form a cooperative, so cacao farmers have a stable occupation since cacao is a monocrop and intercrop. Sanh and Thip also studied and researched cocoa beans fermentation together to develop chocolate from premium quality dried beans.

Flowers, lattes and toast

» Floral cafes seems to be on the rise (look no further than our cover story on floral cafes a few issues ago) and Too Good For You seems to be the next flowery destination for cafe hoppers. Of course, cafes such as these are not without its gimmicks and Too Good For You is, quite frankly, too good for us to be situated in a location where anybody can find it. Yes, this cafe is hidden deep within an old office building, namely the Mukda building in Sathon.

Life in plastic

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 22/06/2018

» Earlier this month, a whale was found dead in the southern province of Songkhla after coughing up more than 80 (count 'em! 80!) pieces of plastic bags. We pay the price for being heavy users of single-use plastic items at the cost of a life of one poor, innocent mammal that made national and international headlines around the world. It's a huge wake-up call for us to take immediate action and change our behaviour with the way we do away with our rubbish.

Come for the hooters, stay for the wings

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 22/06/2018

» On the corner of Soi Thaniya on Silom Road is the newest branch of Hooters, sitting in what was once Flann O'Brien's Irish Pub. The American sports bar franchise, with its famous buffalo wings, beers and of course, Hooters Girls, is no stranger to the country as this newest outlet is the third in Bangkok -- the sixth overall in the country -- to be established. Curious customers who have yet to set foot in one of the eatery chains can do so now with ease as this branch is a few steps away from BTS Sala Daeng and a five-minute walk from MRT Silom.
