Govt's South bias prolongs the conflict

News, Paritta Wangkiat, Published on 05/08/2019

Criminalise torture now

News, Editorial, Published on 24/07/2019

» Torture allegedly committed by soldiers and police officers in Thailand against detainees in recent years has usually happened behind closed doors, involving techniques that leave no bruises or visible wounds. This fact provides a strong enough reason for one to suspect whether the army's detention of insurgent suspect Abdulloh Esormusor on Saturday night -- that resulted in him suffering a cerebral oedema and falling unconscious -- involved torture of some kind.

Start South talks now

News, Editorial, Published on 22/01/2019

» The barbaric murder of monks by separatists in the deep South once again discredits their claim to be responsible enough to govern the region. Worse, it comes at a time when the Thai and Malaysian governments are again offering a coordinated olive branch and appeal to decency.

Make fishing sustainable

News, Editorial, Published on 11/01/2019

Clues scarce in the South

News, Editorial, Published on 02/01/2019

» Police, the Royal Thai Armed Forces and various security agencies have brought a huge credibility gap to the new upsurge of violence in the deep South. As of now, depending on which official has taken the podium, the bombings including the severing of Songkhla's iconic mermaid are political and non-political, either the work of separatist bandits or not, and have either a national or local motive -- but not both. Over the weekend, the Fourth Army commander said it might be local politicians, which seems a head-shaker.

» Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is coming to Thailand later this month to try and tamp down the festering violence in southern Thailand. As his return to power in May has rejuvenated his country's openness and democratisation, he offers a ray of hope to Thailand's future peace and stability.

OPINION

Injustice on display

News, Editorial, Published on 28/08/2018

» On Aug 15, a joint task force of soldiers, two police units and civil servants made the biggest raid of the week in Pattani province in the deep South. The only casualty in the swoop was common sense. The raid resulted in the arrests, summary trial, fines and pending deportation of two women from Myanmar. Their offence was teaching the children of migrant workers without pay.

Schools need simple rules

News, Editorial, Published on 21/08/2018

» Another child has died needlessly because of the criminal ignorance of a deficient school transportation system. Three-year-old Nuran Adiya Ma was left locked in the school van when pre-kindergarten activities began last Wednesday at her Bamrung Muslim School in Pattani. The terrible result was revealed when her mother arrived to pick her up in mid-afternoon. The van driver is under arrest, the school head and teachers are shocked, the family is grieving.
