LIFE

It's a party alright

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/06/2018

» The Firm is a few metres down Sukhumvit 33, a short walk from BTS Phrom Phong and at first glance looks like a nightclub. It is a nightclub, but it's also one of the very few restaurants in Bangkok that serve food 24/7. Yes, you read that right: the kitchen doesn't stop and dishes out food around the clock. The first and second floors are dining areas while the third to fifth floors are where you can dance the night away. Most of the time, nightclub-goers fill the dining area before heading home. Don't get us wrong, The Firm isn't just for late night/early morning, post-party people. You can definitely head over for breakfast, lunch or dinner because what they've got to offer is a feast at any time of day or night.

No FIFA FOMO

» We are smack in the middle of the World Cup, and unlike Americans who use phrases like "World Series" or "World Champions" despite having only American participants, the majority of the world is actually involved in this tournament. There's only about two weeks left, but there are a lot of matches to watch and a whole lot of World Cup to keep you going. Fortunately, Bangkok is high on the World Cup fever, and we've got a number of places you can visit to keep that high.

Oriental simplicity

» On the 27th floor of 137 Pillars, Nimitr Restaurant is adorned beautifully in a regal dark blue that makes the entire place shine and shimmer. Add the high ceiling with modern lights and a fantastic view and you've got yourself a pretty snazzy and hip dining venue for lunch or dinner. Fancy dining in the open air? You can head out to the balcony where they've also got a bar. At first glance, you may think the place is a little swanky and that you're entering a high-class dining restaurant. Despite the feeling of sophistication the place brings up, Nimitr is not a hi-so dining establishment and actually wants you to sit back, relax and enjoy your meal. Besides, who would complain about having such a pretty place to dine in? It just means a lot of IG-worthy opportunities.

Monsoon tales

» While the scorching heat of Thailand will always be around, we're now into the season where that would be alleviated with a "bit" of rainfall. Yes, it's rainy season in Thailand, which means an increase in picky taxi drivers, wet floors on the BTS and Minesweeper-like pavements that could spew dirty water on you when you step on them. Despite the great inconvenience it causes, it also results in great stories that shouldn't just be kept to ourselves. Having said that, we asked you, our dear readers, what experiences you've had in the torrential downpour season, and as always, you didn't disappoint. Here are our faves.

LIFE

Creamalicious

» When you walk into 7-Eleven and head over to their refrigerated items (usually where those quick meals and sandwiches are), you'll find vanilla and chocolate eclairs that are pretty good. The only problem is that "cream puffs" would be the more correct term to describe them. An eclair has an elongated, oblong shape that's filled with cream but also topped with icing, and this is the misconception that Lightning Choux is setting out to correct.

LIFE

Get smart

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 27/07/2018

» Remember how blown away we all were when we saw Tony Stark had an AI butler named Jarvis? That's not entirely impossible now. It's called "home automation" and these home automations come together to make a "smart house" -- you know, like a smartphone. That means you can set up every aspect of your home so that it automatically does stuff for you. In other words, it's a lazy person's dream. You can also control it via your phone or hands-free through an AI assistant whether it be Siri, Google or Alexa, as long as it's all connected to the Wi-Fi.

Club escape

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 27/07/2018

» Taking a vacation is supposed to be a time to relax, unwind and escape reality for a little bit. However, it's the planning prior to the vacation that can cause stress and chaos. Where do you want to go? Where are you going to stay? Do you want to go around and explore the local sights or is this going to be a staycation sort of thing? And then there's the million dollar question: how much is this all going to cost? Will I be able to afford it or is this vacay worth living off saltine crackers for a month?

Borderless cuisine

» Barely more than two weeks old, Cali-Mex Bar & Grill has a pretty interesting story. Its owner, Jeff Moss, is Australian and the restaurant started in Hong Kong. Three years later, Cali-Mex had 20 outlets all over Hong Kong, and fortunately for us Bangkokians, they decided to make their first international venture in the Big Mango. At the Holiday Inn in the corner of Sukhumvit 22, Cali-Mex Bar & Grill has a small space decorated appropriately so that it feels as if you've just stepped into what seems to be a bar at the US-Mexico border sans Trump wall. The entire place gives off an inviting atmosphere, subconsciously telling you to invite your friends to come over, gather at the table and hang over a good meal.
