    Spooktacular

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 26/10/2018

» Halloween isn't a big deal in Thailand. Unlike in the US, we have the good sense of not encouraging our kids to knock on strangers' doors for candy. The downside, of course, is not having any kids to leech candy off of. Despite that, we thought this time of spookiness would be a great opportunity to hear from you, our dear readers, about your frightening (or seemingly frightening) experiences and as always, you didn't disappoint. Here are 13 -- an apt number for this story -- chilling stories from you to get into the Halloween spirit.

    The dessert queen

Guru, Nianne-Lynn Hendricks, Published on 26/10/2018

» Pastry chef Arisara "Papier" Chongphanitkul was crowned Bangkok's Best Pastry Chef 2018 by BK Top Tables earlier this year and it is not an accolade that is easy to come by. Known for modernising Thai desserts, chef Papier trained at the Gastronomicom pastry school in France. Her desserts are often inspired by her working stints alongside pastry greats such as Sadaharu Aoki and Hugues Pouget in Paris, as well as Laurent Gerbaud in Brussels, but always with a Thai twist. In January this year, Chef Papier became the first Thai woman to compete in the international Ladies World Pastry Championship in Rimini, Italy. As group pastry chef for the Issaya group, she lends her creations to Saawaan, Issaya La Patisserie (for which she launched a cookbook last year), Issaya Siamese Club, Baan Phadthai and Le Cochon Blanc. And, for the jet setters, chef Papier also caters the desserts on Thai Smiles. Embarking on a new path in her culinary journey, chef Papier will soon launch her own patisserie, "Ici", where her love for everything praline and other sweets will shine through.

    Unpretentious Asian American

Guru, Nianne-Lynn Hendricks, Published on 26/10/2018

» "Our food reimagines Asian flavours with an American touch", is how Bunker describes itself. Having had a solid fan following (I don't say this lightly. My friend's IG is filled with food porn from Bunker every other week) since it opened in 2016, the restaurant's name and structure is a reference to a military shelter.

    Cool off

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 26/10/2018

» The rainy season is drawing to a close but in pure Bangkok fashion, that doesn't necessarily mean there's an absence of blistering heat. Though the rain gives us a reprieve, you may still want something to cool you off other than seeking refuge in an air-conditioned mall or 7-Elven. Enter Wán, bringing you a sweet and refreshing treat so you can chill from the Bangkok sun. Literally.

» To help you get into a spooky mindframe for Halloween, I would like to share a few Thai-style horror stories. But since people have a shorter attention span these days (who doesn't?), I have summed up the shortest stories that have been circulated online. If you get all of them, you are pretty well-versed in Thai culture. Kudos!
