» The local music industry has seen many acts move from indie to major labels. Somphol Rungphanit (vocals), Piyawat Meekruea (guitar), Prateep Siri-issranan (guitar), Eaksiri Kumbungpai (bass) and Krittapong Sakulnam-anek (drums) of 25hours last year jumped on the bandwagon by signing with Genie Records, under GMM Grammy, after a seven-year stint with the independent Believe Records.

    Pure soul, glorious nostalgia

Life, Pimchanok Phungbun Na Ayudhya, Published on 20/08/2015

» A couple of decades can pass in the blink of an eye when you realise the hits you've been religiously listening to on your Walkman are already 20-years-old. Boyz II Men were a staple on my cassette player. These days, I can still spontaneously sing along when I'll Make Love To You, On Bended Knees, End Of The Road and my personal favourite, 4 Seasons Of Loneliness, come up. And finally, my favourite R&B group of all time was staging their first live performance in town. It was just… not to be missed."Boyz II Men Live In Bangkok" on Sunday night at BITEC was a reunion of 90s kids who grew up bumpin' 'n' grindin' to old-school R&B. The performance took off right on time with opening acts by home-grown talents Apiwat "Nueng" Pongwat of Etc, Sarocha "Suay" Senarat and Weerasak "Gope" Klueakan from The Voice and Thanasit "Ton" Chaturapush from Academy Fantasia who put a soul spin on the start of proceedings. Weerasak did an amazing job by hitting every note of Sam Smith's Lay Me Down. In a shocking surprise, the screens abruptly showed Rangsan Panyaruan, aka Songkran The Voice, when the audience expected to see the R&B legends right after the warm-up. The moodkiller was just played unforgivably at the wrong time.

It's more than an album cover

» 'An artist is a product," said Supichan Rojvanich. The graphic designer du jour is the man who knows how to make that product attractive and wholesome, visually at least. The 31-year-old is the designer behind some of the coolest album covers, for the likes of Slot Machine, Cocktail, Potato, 25hours, Stamp Apiwat, Lula, Ben Chalatit, Two Popetorn, Lipta, among some of Thailand's biggest bands. The list goes on.

» Assoc Prof Dr Santi Khunprasert walked straight to one of his artworks when the photographer asked him where he preferred to get his picture. The piece is a butterfly wing-shaped painting with flowing calligraphic lines, in Thai, that reads: "Art is long, life is short".

    Still Indie

» 'The fact that Fat Festival has inspired the younger generation to write their own music, record it and share it to others is already one of the biggest accomplishments the local music industry has seen," said Poonsak Jaturabul, guitarist of Big Ass, one of the bands that performed at the first instalment of the indie music event.

    In a void of thoughts

Life, Pimchanok Phungbun Na Ayudhya, Published on 08/02/2016

» In a time of self-censorship, when the free mind is blocked, people are restricting their own expression, out of fear. With scepticism, I question how loudly one is allowed to think in such an Orwellian society. When a major political protest took place in March 2009, a Facebook friend asked me openly on my wall if I was a "red shirt" or a "yellow shirt" supporter. I did not answer. Yes, self-censorship. This might have been the very beginning where I -- as an individual -- started to keep my mouth shut. Instead of expressing my opinions, I choose to bottle up my thoughts and keep mum when it comes to politics.
