According to IEA Bioenergy, global wood pellet production observed phenomenal growth, from 6-7 million tonnes in 2006 to 26 million tonnes in 2015, with an annual growth rate of 14%. More than 60% of the pellets are designated for export markets, which has propelled the annual growth rate of global wood chip and pellet exports to 11% for the past five years, reaching US$2.5 billion in 2016.
