    A cut above

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 01/08/2014

» If your intention for the evening is to wander around town, spot this restaurant and pop in for a quick meal — forget it (because you’ll never find it). But if you’re looking for great steaks, an old-school menu and a chef with over 40 years of experience in the US, Knife & Fork Urban Bistro is undeniably worth the drive down the hidden soi. Everybody knows that dining in Thong Lor often leads to a debate about whether there’s actually any parking available or if you’ll have to walk home after being left penniless from all the fancy food and imported wine. It’s safe to say that Knife & Fork offers diners the best of both worlds with sheltered parking, enjoyable dishes and decent selections of Wagyu, Angus and even US Prime cuts — all for a price that won’t break your bank account.

    Hidden gem

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 08/08/2014

» As the lavish name suggests, this tapas bar/restaurant is far from ordinary. It’s a hidden gem perched on the third floor of the popular Grass boutique complex, making it a nice addition to the Thong Lor community. Although the mixture of basic Indian, Italian and Thai menu options doesn’t live up to its opulent name, the place does however offer decent food and a nice ambience at a reasonable price. The decor is the highlight, with a fountain in the middle of what seems to turn into a dance floor at night, sofas perfect for casual dining, hidden booths for extra privacy and an outdoor area where you can sip a cocktail and catch a glimpse of Thong Lorites trying to cross the road. Diners include tourists, office workers and friends of the owner at a reunion or birthday bash.

» As the director of Petpro (www.petpro.co.th, fb.com/petprosupermarket), Thitikhun “Ploy” Yoovidhya will stop at nothing to grow her pet empire. The 25-year-old’s first business was Pawpals, a mobile pet grooming service that gained much success especially with pet communities and pet owners who don’t have time to trim and groom their furry friends. Now she has embarked on a bigger venture with Thailand’s first pet supermarket Petpro, aiming to provide the country with the best pet products and services.

    Hitting the 30s

» Three sois in the heart of town have filled up with so many new restaurants and cafes we decided to designate it a foodie zone. It could be the fact that there’s no more space on Sukhumvit Soi 31 (if there was a Thai version of Monopoly, this would be Park Lane) and with Appia, Bella Napoli and Isao reigning supreme, diners can be seen queuing for dinner at ridiculous hours like 4:30pm. So what are new restaurants to do? Scooch down a couple of sois, it seems. We’ve compiled a list of new eateries in Sukhumvit Sois 31, 33 and 39 so you’ll be able to plan your whole day and night around this area and avoid having to curse and honk your horn at the non-moving traffic. Hurry on down before everyone decides to migrate to Sukhumvit Soi 41.

    Quite the catch

» Named after one of the strongest and most elusive game fish (and we're sure Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea would second that), the restaurant stands proudly on Phahon Yothin Soi 7. Ari has been a melting pot of small cafes and hip restaurants for a long time. There are some that have stood the test of time like Pla Dib — a decade old and still going strong. What Marlin Cafe offers though, is unique contemporary cuisine that can be enjoyed against the backdrop of industrial-inspired decor, much like an uber-cool Soho restaurant of New York City. Spot celebrities dining with their friends and families in one of the private glass rooms. Expats and young couples are also frequent diners here.

    Fit, Firm, Fun

» We're all guilty of finding every excuse to cancel our morning jog with a friend, whether we're too hungover or the prospect of running in this heat is just too much to handle. Now, we know that going to the gym is pretty darn boring; the floor usually smells and the treadmill is always being used by fit seniors running at a much faster pace than you. So to help you stop making excuses, we've scoured the city searching for fun alternative sporting activities — apart from jogging and sit-ups — that will get you fit and firm with the fun.

    Kool, Kram, kollected

» Sure, you may have your go-to places for burgers, pizza and even ramen; but often we find ourselves ransacking the deepest part of our brain for a decent Thai restaurant (besides the food stall outside the office, that is). Set in a stand-alone house tucked inside a sub-soi of the bustling Sukhumvit Soi 39, the restaurant offers a culinary sanctuary for urbanites in need of satiating their Thai food cravings. The venue boasts a casual and rustic charm, much like dining at a friend's house, with the decor mainly made up of knick-knacks and hand-crafted furniture. There is an outdoor dining area (for when winter eventually comes) and plenty of parking for the non-carpooling Bangkokians. Diners include expats, locals and Japanese residents who are living in the area, but, considering how delicious Kram is, you can expect people from all over town to find it soon too.

    Insta-preneur

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 29/08/2014

» Two years ago, Nachapol “Nach” Triwongwaranat co-founded Instaprinta (www.instaprinta.me, fb.com/instaprintame), which has become a household name. Known for providing an exciting live Instagram printing experience for weddings and parties, the service enables attendees to go home with their very own Instagram photo printouts from the event. From programming and configuring the printers to marketing and approaching event agencies, the 26-year-old has now expanded Instaprinta to Singapore and Malaysia. But despite the seemingly primrose path ahead, this young entrepreneur isn’t ready to kick back and relax (just yet).

    Concrete jungle

» Living in Bangkok is like eating a durian — you either love it or hate it, but it's usually smelly. There are those who are Bangkok-born and bred and those who have travelled thousands of miles to live in the so-called City of Angels (or #CityofSelfies, which seems more appropriate nowadays). Don't be fooled by the beautiful temples and overpopulation of 7-Elevens, as living here is not easy and it takes a lot more than an ability to eat spicy food and knowing the BTS map by heart to be called a Bangkokian. Here are some tell-tale signs that you have what it takes to survive the city.

    All the right elements

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 12/09/2014

» The peaceful/vanilla/unlively neighbourhood of Lang Suan enjoys an abundance of eateries; from local favourites offering traditional Thai dishes to the more exotic progressive Indian cuisine of Gaggan. And now, with more community malls popping up, residents and office workers are spoilt for choice. What’s missing from this friendly part of town that’s just a stone’s throw away from Central Chidlom and Central Embassy, however, is a decent brunch place - which is exactly what Stonehouse is. The brainchild(ren) behind this all-day dining eatery are three friends who are mining engineers (hence the name Stonehouse) that wanted to set up a casual hangout spot where diners can relax and find delicious treats from breakfast through to dinner. Unlike most industrial interiors we’ve seen, this one has gone a step further and constructed a beautiful backdrop of mineral stones dug straight from the mines they work at. There’s an outdoor patio perfect for after work chill out sessions with live bands from Thursday to Saturday.
