    Truth and lies

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 11/05/2018

» By some description, this is one of the most political editions of Cannes Film Festival in recent memory, both on screen and off. After three days, the brouhaha over #MeToo (the festival has a dedicated hotline for sexual harassment report, which begs the question: why here and now?), the comment by Jury President Cate Blanchett on the small percentage of female filmmakers in the programme, and the fact that two of the directors whose films are in the competition are under house arrest in their respective countries (Iran and Russia) -- all of this cast a mixed shadow over the 71st edition of the world's largest film festival that still boasts influence and glamour while struggling to maintain its relevance.

Really, who gets to walk the red carpet?

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 11/05/2018

» This is the question I've been asked several times -- not because I'm a veteran of the fabled Cannes red carpet (it's long, intimidating and tedious, plus I'll never invest in a tuxedo that would make me look like a waiter anyway), but because I've been a ringside witness to the said red carpet in the past 16 years of my visiting the festival. All the thousands of photographs of stars, models, actors -- beautiful people of planet Earth, or planet Cinema -- preening down the tapis rouge at Cannes have become even more famous, more recognisable, more awe-inspiring than most of the films shown here. The aura of glamour, fame and radiance actually makes a lot of people think of Cannes as the red carpet, and not the films it shows or its coveted top prize, the Palme d'Or.

    Cue the screaming girls

Life, Apipar Norapoompipat, Published on 11/05/2018

» One of the biggest fears in going to a Harry Styles concert: the fangirls. Young, highly emotional, and full of tremendous passion and energy, their temperament could make or break a concert experience. Yet, amid the blood-curdling screams and occasional drunk chair climbing, the power of the crowd, paired together with the former boy band member's overflowing charm, charisma and showmanship produced an unexpectedly fun and entertaining night.

    Rustic, dry-age and chill

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 11/05/2018

» Groove@CentralWorld is home to a plethora of restaurants that makes it a foodie's paradise. Jumping into the fray is The Ranch, which "soft opened" a month ago. The resto's rustic design and interior is comfy and highly Instagrammable whether you're there for lunch when a bit of sun is streaming in or when it's moonlight. It's hard to believe that the place is still unfinished -- they plan to add other stuff like seats outside -- because it already looks good. We can only imagine how great it would look once they fully open next month. There's a bar on the far end with drinks stacked up to the roof, literally, and you can see inside the glass temperature/humidity-controlled room where they dry-age their meat that's wrapped in cloth soaked in either whiskey or Bourbon. The Ranch simply wants you to settle in and dine comfortably in casual style.

» Trance DJ, promoter, and founder of Pure Pleasure Entertainment, Srangkun Sirisinha better known as Lonskii, is the sole driving force behind the trance scene in Thailand and all of Asia. Starting as a DJ back in 2004 in Melbourne, Australia, and having performed and hosted multiple shows and parties, he sought to bring trance music to Thailand. He is responsible for bringing many high-profile trance DJs to the country as well as expanding the annual trance event Transmission to Bangkok. He recently hosted the three-day long UnKonscious, Asia's biggest trance music festival on the beach this past weekend, held in the private Paradise Beach in Phuket. The event featured 15 international DJs from three trance labels (In Trance We Trust, Grotesque, and Pure Trance) which included Menno de Jong, RAM, and Solarstone as well as regional support of trance DJs from Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

    Big city, small town

» People are natural actors. Observe how they tell stories to their friends, passing on telephone conversations or what they saw or heard. They mimic and flap their arms for emphasis. Hoping for smiles or groans. Novelists aim to do the same with more words. Alas, only the better ones succeed. All too many try and fail.
