School chief deserves jail

» Those investigating a sex scandal involving a school director and a 14-year-old student in Nakhon Ratchasima deserve praise for wrapping up the case in such a short period of time. The initial probe was obviously forced by the huge public attention concerning the case of Nathaphob Thongboontho, director of Ban Patong Tha Neon Samakkhee School in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Bua Yai district, and the girl, who is an 8th-grade student (Mathayom 2).

» Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha needs to understand that this luxury watch scandal is a serious issue. This so-called “private matter” of his deputy will weigh heavily on his credibility as long as he stays on as Thailand’s prime minister -- and will never stops unless and until this apparently inappropriate behavioural problem is corrected.

» The other day I saw some graffiti in a public toilet. It read, ars longa, vita brevis. Art is long, life is short, as the popular translation goes. Like a street artist, I decided to vandalise it, scratching out and changing the first bit with my poor Latin: dictatura longa, vita brevis. Dictatorship is long, life is short.
