Harnessing the bounty of Taiwan

    Life, Published on 24/02/2017

» Taipei has always been a city where one doesn't have to work hard to eat awfully well: It has a street food scene as vibrant as that of Bangkok; restaurants that specialise in both Taiwanese and regional cuisines from around China; thousands of cheap and cheerful joints at which to drink cold beer with small plates and quick stir-fries; and a plethora of sushi bars, a remnant of decades spent under Japanese rule.

The showroom includes a space for distributors to rent and a welcome area for VIP guests. A fashion show showcased the Venus necklace, earrings and rings, which totalled diamonds weighing 200 carats, amid a Mediterranean-style cream and white showroom. Guests included Pornsit Sriorathaikul, Prathung Koosakul, Srisaad Xansamart and Jarin Sumanont.

    An English tradition

    Life, Published on 24/02/2017

» The Langham, London is Europe's first "Grand Hotel". Opened in 1865 by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), it was later frequented by authors Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain and composers Arturo Toscanini and Antonin Dvorak. It has also welcomed Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and Princess Diana. It is where the Duke of Windsor entertained Wallis Simpson during their courtship. It has even been mentioned in several of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels. Last but not least, it is the birthplace of afternoon tea and has continued this tradition for more than 150 years.

Food to release your inner matador

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 24/02/2017

» Islero is not a new name in this column. Even though Bangkok has so many good culinary offerings, with new eateries constantly opening, it is unusual for an establishment to get reviewed twice in a year. This contemporary Spanish restaurant has proved why it deserves to be an exception.

    Bangkok's lyrical power

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 24/02/2017

» Electronic dance music is great and all, but sometimes we feel somewhat disconnected when we listen to it. After all, a lot of the time, words -- our primary mode of expression as humans -- are missing. Music is music -- one of the greatest gifts of humankind and a whole language in itself -- but where would it be without the words?

    It's O-fish-al

    Guru, Published on 24/02/2017

» Sushi Zo is located, like a ninja, almost unnoticeably on the ground floor of Athenee Tower. Despite its high calibre, there's no sign to announce its existence, except for a logo on its door and a narrow window to pique your curiosity (and appetite). That being said, it's definitely worth seeking it out if you're up for a Michelin-quality omakase experience. In 2009, the LA-based restaurant's original branch was awarded its first Michelin star. Last year, its New York branch got another. With this kind of acclaim, you know Bangkok's Sushi Zo is going to be super.

    There's no taste like home

    Guru, Published on 24/02/2017

» The setting: We were sceptical when we visited Madame Shawn Bangkok, the latest addition to Chef Jittini "Oye" Wangsin's Thai restaurant empire which was founded in Paris. After all, when it comes to genuine Thai food you can't get any more authentic than your go-to street vendors. But it's good news from us. Bringing her brand of Thai food back to Bangkok, Khun Oye stays true to the unique Thai flavour while offering all the perks of European fine-dining.
