    » Charoen Krung Road, Thailand's first road completed in 1864, was once a hub of prosperity, rich with money, culture and diversity. Now in 2015, the road that runs past the Old City, along the river all the way to Thanon Tok, has enjoyed an urban revival. Once home to expats, embassies, religious and ethnic communities and shophouses, the road and its many sois have now been enlivened by a younger vibe, from Maitri Chit Road near Yaowarat (Chinatown) to the galleries in mid-Charoen Krung.

    In search of 'Thainess'

    » It has been a productive year for Thai art in the UK. Last week, "Thailand Eye", a survey exhibition of Thai contemporary art opened at the Saatchi Gallery in Central London (see main story). Showcasing almost 60 artworks from Thailand, from paintings, sculptures and photography to moving images, the exhibition is being promoted as the final component of "Totally Thai", a trilogy that aims to promote Thai culture and tourism, as well as celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Bowring Treaty between the UK and Thailand.

    » The Saatchi Gallery in London is currently keeping an eye on Thai contemporary artists with the exhibition "Thailand Eye Presented By Prudential". This first major showcase of contemporary Thai art in the UK is the final instalment in a series of three cultural events to mark the 60th birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, beginning with a khon performance at the Royal Albert Hall and the Thai Film Festival at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in June this year.
