    Democracy? Don't hold      your breath

News, Sanitsuda Ekachai, Published on 15/07/2015

» As long as our culture is deeply rooted in militarism and racism, don't expect a smooth ride towards democracy. I've come to this conclusion after trying to understand why a large number of educated middle-class people still support military dictatorship or why the so-called pro-democracy groups refuse to question Thaksin's authoritarianism.

    NACC sparks death debate

    News, Editorial, Published on 15/07/2015

» The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has done the country a disservice by secretly changing the law and instituting the death penalty as the maximum punishment for graft. The commission claims it discussed the law at length and agreed the death penalty is appropriate for such a severe offence as corruption. The NACC has acted in a disappointing and a high-handed matter. The legislature and government should act to rescind the NACC's secret decree and start over again. A new corruption law is needed, but it must undergo public debate, including the decision to extend the use of capital punishment.

News, Arjan Hehenkamp, Published on 15/07/2015

» The evidence is everywhere. Boatloads of emaciated people adrift on the Andaman Sea, begging for water; exhausted refugees staggering out of the surf on Greek islands, having survived the smugglers' boats; desperate families breaking down the barbed wire fence separating Turkey and Syria, to escape the battles being fought a few miles away. The media is full of stories about people being enslaved in jungle camps in Southeast Asia and buried in mass graves. Those who make it from Libya tell dreadful stories of beheadings, torture and rape.

» As a direct result of the military coup in 2014, all international observers have their eyes on Thailand. We are in the spotlight, but not in a good way. Instead of proudly taking our place on the world stage with dignity and honour, Thailand finds itself on trial by the international community.

    Avoiding communication breakdown

Life, Prapai Kraisornkovit, Published on 15/07/2015

» My mum turned 90 this year. I was fortunate to celebrate the occasion with my family in the United States. At the birthday party, my mother was showered with gifts, food, cakes, hugs, and love from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I think that my mum was very happy to see everyone in one place.
