    Real leaders, step forward

    News, Published on 05/02/2014

» Like it or not, Sunday's election brought a touch of compromise to a previously uncompromising situation. Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban found there was an important and undeniable groundswell, with millions of people determined to vote. Some literally fought to do so. On the other hand, the protests turned the polls into a somewhat drab affair. As the only major party running, Pheu Thai won the vote, but caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra earned no renewed national mandate.

    How the brain views economics

    News, Published on 05/02/2014

» In his groundbreaking 2005 book On Intelligence, Jeff Hawkins proposed an alternative paradigm of how the human brain works. In his view, the brain is not a Turing machine that manipulates symbols according to a table of rules, which is the model on which computers and artificial intelligence have been based. Instead, the brain is a giant hierarchical memory that is constantly recording what it perceives and predicting what will come next.

    Postbag: Ballot box triumphs

    News, Published on 05/02/2014

» Vint Chavala's "Lame duck successor" (PostBag Feb 3), illustrates one of the main problems with the PDRC: its apparent belief that it's only the views of people in Bangkok which matter. Why else would he choose to quote the turnout figure for Bangkok rather than for the country as a whole? Does the rest of the country not count? If one looks

    A second chance

Life, Prapai Kraisornkovit, Published on 05/02/2014

» By the third week of January, I knew I was doomed. Like many, with the start of a new year, I made a New Year's resolution. I wanted to eat better, take a better care of my body and sleep and exercise more. They seemed like doable goals. But as the days of January passed, they turned out to be harder to achieve than I thought.

A sexy new way to pay

Life, James Hein, Published on 05/02/2014

» Forget PayPal, what you really need is at least as The Register in the UK quaintly puts it "pay by bonk". Using the system, you knock your smartphone against another smartphone or device in a store to transfer funds from one account to another. A new payment system is also being planned at Apple, who wants to lead the near field communications (NFC) race. It will no doubt heavily feature the iTunes store (i.e. you pay money into your iTunes account and then use that to purchase items in the real world). This could essentially work like an iTunes-based debit card. Remember, however, that these NFC payment systems are also subject to those of a more unsavoury nature passing close to you and grabbing some cash for themselves. It is early days yet, but I expect that this will turn into a real issue. As for me, I bought myself a woven stainless steel wallet that acts as a Faraday cage. You could also just wrap it in tin foil, I suppose.
