Parallel ambitions
Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 25/01/2012
» We wish them the best of luck, and we pray Hua Hin International Film Festival won't turn out to be a lemon. A month ago hardly anybody had heard about this brand-new event, and now those who've heard about it are wondering if they'll take the trouble of making a trip down to the seaside town to watch the films. Our advise is, if the sky is blue and you have nothing else to do (and if you want to forsake the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival that will also happen this weekend) just go for the fun of it. Worst case, you can always decamp to the beach, or one of the seafood joints in Khao Takieb.

The naked Proof
Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 25/01/2012
» Of late, there's been a fair share of diverse, interesting international bands playing Bangkok, rather than the usual stadium acts or veteran performers who are on their last world tour... for the 10th time. The Naked and Famous were the latest in line to fulfil the wet dreams of all hipsters when they rolled into town last week.

Therapy as art, and vice versa
Life, Amitha Amranand, Published on 25/01/2012
» Growing up in this country, I often heard people say that Thais don't go to psychiatrists to sort out their problems; they go to fortune-tellers. » Last year in the hyperkinetic film Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson growled and grumbled playing the role of a federal agent chasing a pack of auto-bandits in Rio de Janeiro. Johnson, also known as The Rock, is a prime cut of beef that glitters in the Brazilian sun; yet the man holds his character with gravity, zipping through the breakneck action with all scowl and no smile.

Screening of old films at BACC
Life, Published on 25/01/2012
» The Thai Film Archive organises a screening every Tues, Wed and Thurs at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), with a mix of both old and new Thai films, as well as a programme of international cinema. The screening is free and takes place in the screening room on the 4th floor. With this temporary auditorium located at the convenient location right in the heart of Pathumwan district, the Film Archive can now deflect some of the complaints its headquarters in Salaya (which has a much better screening environment, though) received for being too far and too inconvenient, especially for movie fans who do not drive.
