Pizza Massilia, all grown up

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 26/02/2016

» Wander down Soi Ruam Rudee and you’re guaranteed to be extremely well-fed even before you hit its halfway point. But one can never have too many Italian joints, especially when you live in Bangkok. Thus, the recently opened Pizza Massilia Ruam Rudee was welcomed to the neighbourhood with open arms. It helps too, that the restaurant has already made a name for itself, dishing out great pizza during last year’s food truck boom. Its restaurant counterpart, though, is operating on a much larger scale, with more items on the menu and top-notch service in a striking locale with a late baroque interior and pastel hues. Visually stunning, the aesthetics take a pizzeria experience to the next level, as well as reflect the unique stance on cuisine.

» Dixielogy (fb.com/dixielogy) is an up-and-coming vintage jazz band that has quickly made a name for itself within Bangkok's bustling nightlife scene. Having headlined at Maggie Choo's and Brown Sugar, it's safe to say that its unique sound, inspired by dixieland and early styles of jazz, has received plenty of attention among jazz enthusiasts all over the city. Band members include Taweesak "Pipe" Booranapanitpan (clarinet), Watchara "Jeng" Atchariyavaranon (Trumpet), Panai "Pop" Imjai (banjo), Pawin "Win" Limkangvanmongkol (piano), Jutichoke "Junior" Assarasakorn (sousaphone) and Ben Poovaviranon (drums). Guru catches up with the group to find out what it's like for these affable musicians to bring back tunes from the 1910s and to swim against the tide of currently popular musical genres.

Healthy helpings

» Now, I know it's Christmastime, and the farthest thing on your mind is eating clean and calorie-counting. Can you really blame us for wanting a good roast and a huge slice of pie? 'Tis the season, after all, for indulgent meals.

» "Lying on the ground" is the literal meaning of the restaurant's name, a reference to the traditional way hawkers and street traders display and sell their goods. It's clear that Thai food culture continues to inspire Thitid "Ton" Tassanakajohn, the talented chef and restauranteur behind successful eateries Le Du, Baan and Taper. He can now add Baa Ga Din to that list, having found a gastronomical sweet spot that not only delights with a fine-dining level of culinary creativity while homing in on familiar nuances of the food we hold dear to our hearts (and stomachs).

Post-new year's syndrome

» Let's nip this in the bud. Holiday season is officially over. Phew, and we thought that was going to be hard to say. As it turns out, writing it down is much easier.Since we're not ones to mope nor sulk about how we've already broken the resolutions we set seven days ago (thanks to that piece of leftover cake in the fridge), we thought it best to give you, Dear Readers, a quick rundown on how to get over holiday withdrawal and grab life by the horns (and 2016 by the balls).

Pumped-up pedalling

» Last week, I lost the love of my life: my Bluetooth headphones. They were no longer playing music the way they were supposed to, only blasting out incoherent sounds from one of the buds. Sure, I tried turning them on and off, charging them, hitting them against the wall a couple of times. But it was too late -- my best gym buddy was dead.

» Not to sound like an uncivilised Bangkokian, too uncouth and ill-groomed to fit in with the well-mannered hi-sos who ever-so-graciously provide our city with such sophistication and class, but I've found myself, on various occasions, without the time to sit down and enjoy a proper lunch. I've actually become incredibly adept at eating on the go. Literally. I can speed walk while enjoying a 7-Eleven sandwich with ease, and I've even mastered the eating-and-driving manoeuvre. Is it safe? Probably not. But when you're living in this traffic-clogged metropolis, you learn to multitask.

Splish, splash, spin

» When I first heard about Aquabiking, I was sceptical for a couple of reasons. My idea of surf and turf sounds much better on a plate than a new form of exercise. And cycling in the pool? That's crazy. I suppose I did have a similar thought when the antigravity yoga craze took over the world. Practising a sun salutation is difficult enough on normal ground -- do we really need to be wrapped inside stretchy fabric and hung upside down?
