LIFE

None but the brave

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 21/10/2013

» Like any perfectly-toned and seasoned diver, American athlete David Colturi glibly leaps off the 10-metre platform at Hua Mak swimming pool to execute a couple of somersaults before slicing into the water with a slick barani. He jumps off the high platform as easily as if it were only one metre like any other US national champion can, but the main difference is that he enters the water feet first. To do so is to go against every natural instinct and reflex a normal diver has ever known, as well as to defy all lessons taught and what the muscles have been trained _ and want _ to do. Albeit lesser known, the ability to enter the water feet first effortlessly with such an experienced sleekness is a signifying mark that this is also a cliff diver we're looking at.

» It has taken Roy Flynn, 36, and Nicole Denise Schreiter, 31,500 days to travel by car from Switzerland to Thailand. Leaving their old lives as a technical businessman and nurse in Switzerland behind without any doubts in March last year, thanks to a sense of wanderlust, the couple has travelled through 23 countries, four world religions, and many plateaus and climates after saving for the trip for seven years. Their route on land has led them to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Siberia, Mongolia, Western China, the Himalayas, India, and finally to Southeast Asia.

» Many starry-eyed hopefuls ooh and aah at the accomplishments of Itthipat Peeradechapan, the young founder of the successful seaweed snack Tao Kae Noi.

A Double Serving Of Fashion

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 06/12/2013

» Imagine if an article of clothing from your favourite designer brand suddenly shape-shifted into a plate of food. The morphing part may still be limited to our sci-fi daydreams, but the food part is very much real. A handful of Thai luxury and fashion brands _ Boyy, Issue, Karmakamet and Kloset _ have recently opened restaurants and cafes within the past five months.

LIFE

High-life hybrid

» There's never a dearth of stylish spots in the capital's flashy wining and dining capital, Thong Lor, but for a restaurant to still impress despite being in a full-throttle zone crammed with other just-as-chic venues, it's hardly doing "meh" at all.

LIFE

'Tween-Times tidbits

» If you had suggested a breakfast date five years ago, your friends would probably have looked at you like you'd just suggested they shave their heads. Going out for brunch, let alone breakfast, is hardly part of the Thai lifestyle, with its roots in Western culture. Nevertheless, breakfast and all-day-dining venues have been deluging Bangkok, attracting hordes of trend-followers _ if not the genuinely famished _ with their naked lightbulb decor and staples of egg-based dishes.

LIFE

Cute enough to eat

» We're an appearance-oriented nation and this mindset extends to food; anything that isn't photogenic already loses 50 brownie points, regardless of how it tastes. If you're looking to find some sweets that are even more of a treat to the eyes than the stomach, head down to Pop Me Up Cafe, which opened three months back. After a successful stint selling their custom-made cake-pops online, three friends Jinsupang, Ansaya and Rubkwan have finally given their business a physical and very much pastel-hued outlet where customers can pick up their orders and enjoy freshly made cake-pops in a serene setting with cool drinks in towering glasses. Try their Italian lime apple soda (75 baht) which gives a sour twist to this usually sweet drink.

Glimmer of Hope

» Setting out to be Southeast Asia's largest showcase of the world's finest jewellery and gems fair, the Singapore Jewellery and Gem Fair is the sister _ but hardly the complement _ to the world's ultimate and most established fine jewellery event: the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, which is held in September and organised by UBM. Making its debut appearance at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre from Oct 12-15, the fair has established itself as an exemplary contender likely to emerge as the next top ruler of Asean's fine jewellery exhibition.

Dastardly desserts minus the dainty frills

» Pop into Silom Complex today to celebrate the recent opening of the second branch in Thailand of Patisserie Masatomi, which is fast making a name for its Japanese-style sweet treats with a French foundation. Sticking with the sober garb of the original _ simple Japanese woodwork and a grey colour scheme, this little nook on the fourth floor is the must-go-to for gents who love pastries and sweetmeats but without the feminine frills.

All in proportion

» American bites, with all their fatty and cheesy goodness, don't have to be limited to neon-lit diners or franchise settings. The perception is that this type of food couldn't possibly be sophisticated, but at The Garret, new American cuisine is given an upgrade and a swankier setting than the usual greasy crib.
