Choked Up

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 17/06/2016

» Chokers have made a huge comeback in the past year, and it's important to now realise that they come in way more shapes and forms than a flimsy little plastic braid. We're giving you six distinct ways to embrace chokers in 2016.

12 nights of European films

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» It's that time of year again. The time of year to get lost in European romance, tragedy, history, comedy and perhaps a little bit of all. If you've got the conviction and resources to catch all 17 films across 12 days, by all means carpe diem. But if you're looking for a little guidance in choosing screenings, here are our top five picks of the festival.

Beef & Shake Doesn't Miss a Beat

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» The first time I visited Beef & Shake, unannounced, I was around Chong Nonsi, hungry and also desperate for a place to briefly anchor ship to put the finishing touches on a story I was supposed to submit a day earlier. Knowing my affinity for mushroom burgers, my entourage suggested a new burger place near the BTS that had, not just one, but several options of fungi burgers.

Inked for a week

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» What's left to talk about in style after clothes, accessories, hair and make-up, but skin? And we're not just after skincare, which takes ages to show subtle results, but something trendy you can do to your skin instantly, temporarily and harmlessly for some dramatic self-expression. The hot topic in style this week is sticker tattoos. The benefits of this form of peel-on skin décor are vast, ranging from deliberately annoying conservative folks to entertaining the idea of getting a real one. Whatever your motive, you gotta know what's out there, and that's where we come in. Guru reviews three local vendors for temporary tatts, all of which can be ordered via your phone.

The Rustic Man

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 01/07/2016

» We all have that friend, colleague, family member or beau perhaps who seems to wear the exact same thing day in and day out. (Or maybe this is you!) Whether you approve of his monotony of style or not, you have to admit that his outfits make the most out of practicality, probably sit on that coveted cusp of appropriate and hella comfortable and, most importantly, are integral to his presence. Let's not try to change what's already perfect, people, but offer our "shirt and jeans" kinda guy discreet options for a wardrobe update onlookers may not notice but he certainly will. After all, that's all that really matters.

Debunking Bangkok's bunker

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 01/07/2016

» Where else on Sathon would a mod American night-time eatery and bar called Bunker be located on other than the suave Soi 12? Bunker, a reference to a fortified military shelter, sought to recreate the concept of refuge with contrasting architecture and interior design. The steel and concrete shell of a long-gone massage parlour camouflages a warm and lively secret. That warm glow you feel upon stepping inside? It comes from two places: the radiant bar and the exceptional hospitality of the staff. You can still feel the aura from the private upper floors, used exclusively for dining. The low-key outdoor area on the third floor would make an ideal spot to enjoy cold beer on tap, once the rainy season passes.

Say it with a card

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 01/07/2016

» You know what we need to bring back? Greeting cards. Because look where our laziness to show some love on special occasions has gotten us: three-letter wishes on Facebook. But maybe it's not even our fault. A tacky generic greeting card that has probably been sitting in Central since the 90s isn't that much better than an "HBD". So, we've given greeting and sympathy cards a brutally honest, Bangkok-relevant upgrade. Show some real love, everyone.

A Frame Has No Name

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 15/07/2016

» We're not unimpressed by the option of frames and shades spectacle labels have to offer this season. Oh no, not at all. Just the names of all their fabulous products are kind of a downer when getting round to ordering new glasses: "I'd like to get the RX4246V please" or "the SPR 56S". Geez, even typing that felt like accounting. Wouldn't it be added value to the consumer's experience to have more relevant and memorable product names to recite with enthusiasm at checkout? That's why we decided to rechristen some of our favourite designer eyewear from this season. You're welcome.

Guru university

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 22/07/2016

» Sadly, many of you will agree that little of what you learned during your school years is actually proving useful to you at this very moment in your adult life -- especially if you were schooled here. That got us thinking. We’re the experts on practical life in this city. Shouldn’t we be the ones to say what needs to be taught in school, so that future Bangkokian grown-ups can have the savvy start us alumni weren’t privileged enough to have?
