Galleries' night!

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 03/02/2017

» Ditch your regular after work plans for gallery hopping this Friday night and weekend. Galleries' Night, an artistic affair that will take up your time between 5pm to late, returns on February 3 and 4. Venues on the Sathon side open their shows first on a Friday night, while those on the Sukhumvit side will wait until the next night to launch their exhibitions. After that you're free to catch anything you missed. However, we're not gonna lie and tell you that you can or should visit, all 50 or so participating galleries over such short period of time. So, here's a manageable list of 10 that we think deserve a little more attention than the others, as you plan your nightly art crawl through Bangkok this weekend.

Bewitched

» Over New Year's, I watched a local film in Los Angeles that peaked on so many levels. It was called The Love Witch. The story centres around a sensual dark-haired witch, played by the stunning Samantha Robinson (look her up), who uses magic to make men fall in love with her. It's absolutely brilliant. Seriously, go search and watch it. Because not only did we enjoy The Love Witch for its witty commentary on love, sexuality and feminism through the medium of comedic horror, the film left us obsessed with ultra-sassy 60s fashion. Ever since, we've been looking for ways to pay tribute to the Love Witch's style, and what better time to unleash the attitude than during the season of love.

It's not all about the pancakes

» The setting: Get used to knowing what Siam Paragon's North Zone refers to because that's where many new and exciting restaurants have been popping up, one of them of course being the famous Clinton Street Baking Company. The Bangkok branch may not be located in ideal surroundings, compared to the original standalone in Lower East Side New York, but efforts to emulate the vibes as close as possible are commendable. The diner is open before the mall, at 8am, same as the New York one. There's direct access via the cobblestone road between Siam Kempinski and Siam Paragon, so you can avoid stepping foot in the mall altogether. The red diner couches are there and so is the iconic red ridged storefront. Even the table setting, complete with a bottle of Tabasco, seems to be doing something purposely to make us feel nostalgic for US diners.

» Tada Piriyanupong, 26, is a Thai business arts major at ABAC who has lived most of his life in Dubai. Charles-Alexis Guenard, also studying at ABAC but in the faculty of communication arts, is a half-Thai and half-French 20-year-old who was born in France. Together, they form a charismatic magic duo known as "Charles The French and Tada" who perform all over the country in major hotels, shopping venues and occasionally on television. We had a chat with the pair and it was everything one could hope for in an interview — reeking with personality.

» A fact about pineapples: did you know that pineapples are actually berries, or more accurately a fusion of berries? This is just something you'd know if you were crazy about the fruit, and if you are cray-cray about pineapples then you should also be aware of the new dessert spot in town specifically catering to your love of the succulent yellow fruit.

Wine Me Dine Me Indeed

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 13/01/2017

» The Setting: Cantina Wine Bar & Italian Kitchen graces Ari with its first trattoria, a restaurant serving up true Italian comforts. Managed by Soho Hospitality, the group that has also brought us Havana Social, Charcoal and Above Eleven, it's no wonder the interior of this cozy and casual little Italian spot is so on point. Candle-lit for its evening opening hours, the best date seats are near the windows or against the rustic brick walls. Winos, however, will demand for the tables at the base of the glorious wine cellar in the middle of the restaurant. To reach the top of this bottle library, you'd have to climb the wooden ladder perched against it, or swing from the chandelier from the second floor. We recommend neither. You should just ask the staff, unless the owner of the establishment Matthew Milotich is already grabbing you some of the good stuff. But no matter where you sit in this intimate setting, you've got a view of the wine and of chefs hustling behind the counter. Pizza chefs work in calmer situations up at a baking station on a more private second floor.

Actual goals

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 20/01/2017

» Resolutions, smesolutions, am I right? Do you find yourself setting them superficially year after year, only to carry them on to the next one? Or not even bother anymore? At the same time, you know goals are essential to achievements. So maybe what we all need is to have a real and open exchange about them.
