How to feed the world's ten billion people

Oped, Yurdi Yasmi, Published on 22/01/2026

» With the world struggling to feed eight billion people today, how will we feed ten billion by 2050?

Trade talks to-do list

Oped, Editorial, Published on 17/05/2025

» Finally, the government has laid its cards on the table, giving details of the trade proposal it will submit to the US Trade Representative (USTR). Yet some offers will raise doubts about their enforceability and impact.

China, Malaysia eye food security

Oped, Genevieve Donnellon-May, Published on 18/02/2025

» Can Malaysia and China help secure Asia's food future? A landmark agreement signed between the two nations late last year aims to do just that.

Farms and solar energy can co-exist

Oped, Rapeepat Ingkasit, Published on 08/01/2025

» At first glance, the idea of combining agriculture with solar energy seems far-fetched. How can crops and solar panels compete for the same sunlight? My view changed after I visited the Sosa Mega Solar Sharing site in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, last month. As part of a media tour organised by Mekong Watch, a Japanese non-profit conservation group, I had the opportunity to see first-hand how "agrivoltaics" -- an innovative integration of agriculture and solar energy -- are reshaping rural landscapes and revitalising communities.

GDP figures don't reflect real situation

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 26/12/2024

» This article is the last for 2024. I have made many bad predictions about the Thai economy throughout the year. Many became true, like the contracting credit market, the NPL explosion, and an ineffective cash handout programme. Many have not become true (or have they?). One was GDP growth. Instead of shrinking as I predicted, GDP growth rates improved from quarter to quarter. They were 1.6% for Q1, 2.2% for Q2, and 3.0% for Q3. And it is expected to be 3.5% for Q4 to fulfil the annual 2.6% growth projection.

The toxic legacy left by the Green Revolution

Oped, Jayati Ghosh, Published on 15/02/2024

» There are more than 390,000 identified plant species in the world, but just three -- rice, maize, and wheat -- account for roughly 60% of the plant-based calories in our diets. The dominance of these three grains is largely the result of major technological breakthroughs, particularly the development of high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of rice and wheat during the Green Revolution of the 1960s.

School sows seeds of food wisdom

Oped, Joan Rumengan, Published on 06/01/2024

» 'I bring a very big sack of delicious wheat for all of you," Buto Trigo, a monster with a scary set of three eyes, told her audience of young people at an open-air theatre performance in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. "It's good to fry or steam. Try it! Your homemade cooking will look beautiful," she said, likening its beauty to that of the sinister queen she is allied to.

The myth of global grain shortages

Oped, Jayati Ghosh, Published on 17/08/2023

» In recent years, soaring food prices and the growing frequency and intensity of floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events have prompted warnings of a looming grain shortage, potentially spelling disaster for the world's poorest and most vulnerable populations. Although climate change poses the greatest medium to long-term threat to global food security, Russia's invasion of Ukraine is frequently cited as the immediate cause of the current hunger crisis. But this is a red herring.

Bring hunger profiteers to heel

Oped, Jennifer Clapp & Phil Howard, Published on 17/08/2023

» The Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have caused commodity prices to soar in recent years, severely undermining global food security. Now, global food prices are down from the peaks of a year ago, but no one should be complacent: the world's food woes are far from over. The risk of additional price volatility remains high.
