News, Mike Dolan, Published on 16/08/2025

» Treasury market bulwark or catalyst for a liquidity bubble? No one's sure whether the now government-blessed "stablecoin" explosion will juice or destabilise the economy.

Work together for rule-based trade

Oped, Anders Ahnlid, Published on 20/05/2025

» For almost 80 years, the multilateral rule-book has been the basis for international trade relations. Under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and its successor, the World Trade Organization (WTO), world trade has expanded at an unprecedented rate, contributing to growth and prosperity around the world. Our countries, Thailand and Sweden, share a long tradition of support for the rule-based trading system.

Protectionism hurts climate effort

Oped, Ma Jun, Published on 04/02/2025

» US President Donald Trump's policy to raise tariffs on imports from Canada, China and Mexico has the world bracing for major trade disruptions. While protectionism has come back into vogue, and countries like the United States are cultivating critical sectors at home to bolster their economic security, the reversal of free trade will accelerate under Mr Trump, with far-reaching consequences -- not least for the fight against climate change.

Clash of opinions

Oped, Postbag, Published on 03/04/2024

» Re: "Thaksin's influence no longer potent", (Opinion, April 1). I disagree with columnist Veera Prateepchaikul on two points. First, the convict Thaksin Shinawatra does remain influential: he powerfully taints every figure and institution that recklessly associates itself with him; that is a potent influence.

The clean energy race is on but it needs investment

Oped, Gernot Wagner, Published on 26/08/2022

» The United States has entered the clean-energy race in a big way with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022. Not only will the law subsidise US renewable-energy producers and consumers to the tune of US$369 billion (13 trillion baht) over 10 years; it also authorises the Department of Energy (DOE) to lend up to $250 billion to US companies that are investing in the clean energy transition. Between the IRA and the recent $52 billion package to boost US semiconductor production, it is clear that industrial policy is back in vogue in Washington, DC.

A just transition requires a major paradigm shift

Oped, Ingo Puhl, Published on 05/08/2021

» Covid-19 is a disease that not only attacks individuals but Thai society. Millions of workers who make subsistence wages or already face household debt now have no income. Thailand is seeing -- like much of the world -- people sliding back into extreme poverty and deeper social inequality. Mental health is deteriorating as a result. Help does not seem at hand for people, who are feeling abandoned by a lack of clear government assistance.

The 'salim' phenomenon in Thai politics

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 18/12/2020

» Few phenomena explain and underpin Thai politics more than the rise and decline of what is known pejoratively these days as salim, a metaphorical variation of salim, a Thai dessert comprising multi-coloured thin noodles served in coconut milk with crushed ice. Once socially attractive and politically fashionable, salim have gone out of vogue, looked down upon in a new era of anti-establishment protest for pro-democracy reforms under the new reign. What becomes of these pro-military royalist-conservative salim will have much to say about what will happen to Thailand's political future.
