» It's April 2000. I'm 14 years old, lying on a beach in the Bahamas, a bottle of SPF 20 at my side. I periodically check to see how my suntan is developing, watching with fascination as my pale white skin turns a deep, chestnut brown. Through the headphones of my Discman, Baz Luhrmann is telling the class of '99 to "trust me on the sunscreen". I nod along to the beat, oblivious to the irony. Luhrmann's caution is ahead of the curve.

» Parents in the 2000s are not taught parenting with addictive technology. The examples did not exist, and a comprehensive guide still needs to be written. We know parenting is a series of successes and failures with unsure outcomes. Presence (physical and mental) matters; however, technology is eroding parents' presence. Parents, with good intentions, are sidelining the tasks required to grow a well-rounded, responsible, and contributing member of society by farming out their duties to technology and drowning themselves in distractions. It is thus time to start teaching parents how to become better parents.

» The controversial bill to regulate the use and production of marijuana and hemp is back on the parliamentary agenda. However, the Hmong hill tribe people want the law to leave hemp out, fearing it would jeopardise the age-old use of hemp in their culture and traditions. The government should listen to their concerns.
