Leave no stone unturned in graft probes

Oped, Chairith Yonpiam, Published on 05/04/2025

» The collapse of the State Audit Office's (SAO) under-construction building last week following a powerful quake in Myanmar set a world record -- but not in a way that Thai people would take pride in.

Thai police graft highlights bigger issues

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 26/04/2024

» There is no bigger news on the current Thai political scene than corruption among the top echelons of the police force. At issue is the tussle between Thailand's two senior-most cops, Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn and Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol, both accusing each other of being on the take. Their high-stakes feud would normally be a run-of-the-mill story for the infamously shady Thai police but this case has become a mirror and microcosm of structural graft that is corroding the highest corridors of politics, economy, and society.

A coup attempt at the IMF to oust Georgieva

Oped, Joseph E Stiglitz, Published on 09/10/2021

» Moves are afoot to replace or at least greatly weaken Kristalina Georgieva, the International Monetary Fund's managing director since 2019. This is the same Ms Georgieva whose excellent response to the pandemic quickly provided funds to keep countries afloat and to address the health crisis, and who successfully advocated for a $650 billion issuance of IMF "money" (special drawing rights, or SDRs), so essential for low- and middle-income countries' recovery. Moreover, she has positioned the fund to take a global leadership role in responding to the existential crisis of climate change.

Rakhine engagement must be based on facts

Oped, Laetitia van den Assum and Kobsak Chutikul, Published on 15/05/2021

» The Asean special summit on Myanmar's crisis in Jakarta on April 24 led to a five-point consensus that has received considerable international attention. But another important paragraph in the summit statement has largely been overlooked.

Don't silence deep thinkers

Oped, Editorial, Published on 22/04/2021

» The recent termination of employment, work permit and related visa of David Streckfuss, an American academic who has worked at Khon Kaen University for the past 27 years, has intensified fears over suppression of academic freedom.
