Making scents

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 07/03/2023

» During the time when Chalida Kunalai, a scent designer, was creating a mackerel odour for a set of 12 children's books titled Ni Than Lom Hai Jai (Scent Tales), a cat often roamed near the front door of her office, NOSEstory. Eventually she let the cat in the office, where it indeed nosed around to find the appetising fish. There was no mackerel, but there was some proof Chalida had succeeded.

Homemade goodness

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 06/11/2020

» When I first learned eight months ago that chef Fae Chummongkhon was leaving the Front Room, I was heartbroken. Through her creations -- some of the most progressive yet comforting food I've ever had -- Fae introduced to Bangkok, during her 2-year residency, a truly adorable interpretation of Thai-inspired Nordic cuisine, which was, and still is, very new to the city.

Eyes wide open

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 08/05/2020

» The literature about modern Thai politics is not abundant, and by this I mean a narrative that grounds its characters in the double-whammy of coup d'etat and street protest that characterised the mid-2000s to mid-2010s. The period, plus a few years earlier when Thaksin Shinawatra rose to power, contains some of the most convulsive and era-defining moments that continue to shape the visible and invisible dimensions of Thai society in the present time, and it's astonishing that not more writers find it a rich wellspring of artistic expression (on the contrary, visual artists and theatre artists seem more responsive to the political currents of the same period).

Heading south

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 28/02/2020

» The picturesque ocean view enjoyed before sundown from Long Dtai's terrace was so breathtaking, you wondered why the restaurant didn't open for lunch, with the sea so clearly visible.

Reeking havoc

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 18/06/2019

» For over two years now, locals at Chao Lae Community in Chon Buri province haven't been able to breathe fresh air. Massive flow from a sewer tunnel located next to the beach in their neighbourhood has turned part of the sea into polluted, smelly water. After the news made headlines last month, a local fisherman said the only thing the authorities from the municipality did was to drop Effective Microorganism (EM) balls in the sewage to get rid of the smell. But at times, the malodorousness returns to wreak havoc on people in the community.

Southern sensation deserves its reputation

Life, Nianne-Lynn Hendricks, Published on 25/01/2019

» The name Supaksorn "Ice" Jongsiri has long been associated with Baan Ice, the southern Thai restaurant known for its traditional family recipes. This changed last year. Now chef Ice is known as the man behind Michelin-starred Sorn, one of Bangkok's most exclusive new restaurants. Sorn has a four-month waiting list. And for good reason.

Destination waterfall

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 13/12/2018

» A 4 minute 36 second film clip showing the happy time spent by the young King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit at the stunning Phrom Lok Waterfall in Phrom Khiri district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, in 1959 brings smiles and tears of joy to almost everyone who views it. This has inspired many to visit tambon Phrom Lok, which is now easy to reach by car unlike when the royal couple travelled by Jeep on a 10km dirt road.
