» Sharing a border with Bangkok, Nonthaburi once served as a fortress town, but nowadays it is a popular weekend hideaway where local tourists can unwind and discover Ayutthaya-era history. To save time, King Thai Sa constructed the Lat Kret Noi network as a detour on the maritime trade route connecting the Gulf of Siam and the former capital of Ayutthaya.

Passion play

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 15/07/2022

» I was a little hesitant before going into Pistol, a music biographical drama miniseries, as I wasn't that convinced how the filmmaker is ever going to pull off such a story. The Sex Pistols was no doubt an important group in rock music history, having so much influence on the 70s UK punk movement as well as DIY and indie rock music a few decades later. However, their career was rather short, lasting a little over two years. Most of the news while they were active was rather negative with coverage focused more on scandals caused by the band members' behaviour than the actual music.

» John Cooper Clarke, Britain's "punk poet" has had an interesting life. Now 72, the "Bard Of Salford" recalls the highs (and there were a lot) and lows in a rambling, funny autobiography, I Wanna Be Yours (Picador), which was published in 2020.

From his breakthrough TV film Root Rock Reggae in 1977, to his last film, a documentary on jazz great Count Basie in 2019, Marre was in a class of his own.

LIFE

Thailand's other pandemic

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 02/06/2020

» May* stood impassively over the lifeless body of her estranged husband. A pistol clinched tightly in her trembling right hand. The firearm, purchased over the internet by her husband who was a gun enthusiast and member of a shooting range, was the weapon she used on the fateful day she resorted to drastic measures to stop her husband from hurting her. A company manager, May was on the verge of a nasty divorce from her partner, a physically abusive man with a drinking problem.

LIFE

Framing life and death

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 14/08/2019

» Some nights nothing happens, and some nights too much happens. For one crew of rescue workers -- volunteers at one of Thailand's largest rescue organisations, Ruamkatanyu Foundation -- each shift is predictable only for its unpredictability. Nights at their base beneath a Nonthaburi overpass are spent monitoring the police radio channel for its most commonly-used word -- accident.

LIFE

Klong Toey's own worker of magic

Life, Father Joe Maier, Published on 02/07/2019

» Jae Muey usually dressed in a secondhand slightly frayed wedding dress, looking very much like a fairy godmother. But she didn't do any whambo-bambo Harry Potter stuff. None of her magic shot out of a fancy wand. Rather, her special powers came from a beautiful soul and a faded three-wheel rickety push cart with a squeaky side wheel.
