The perils of creating a power vacuum in Iran

Oped, Stephen Holmes, Published on 05/03/2026

» Critics of the attack on Iran by the United States and Israel point out that US President Donald Trump has no plan for what comes next. And they are not wrong: when Mr Trump boasts that he can resolve wars in a single day, he merely exposes the limits of his attention span. But the real problem is not the shortness of Mr Trump's time horizon; it's the narrowness of his threat perception.

Killing the goose that lays the Olympic gold medal

Oped, Nancy Qian, Published on 24/02/2026

» The Olympic Games have always been about more than sports, with the medal count serving as a measure of national vitality. The 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina are no different. The Americans, like everyone else, want confirmation of their preeminence. » Re: "BJT win bodes well for conservatives", (BP, Feb 11). Given the tallies of the nationwide party list vote, I don't understand the justification for the following assertions: "BJT's landslide victory reflects a surge of nationalist sentiment" (5.9M votes); the PP suffered from "lingering voter scepticism" and "eroded public confidence" (9.8M votes).

Oped, Postbag, Published on 26/09/2025

» Re: "Road collapse shocker", (BP, Sept 25). Indeed, a picture is worth a thousand words -- if there is one! But why, oh why, are Bangkok Post reporters incapable of including a map with their articles, whether they are about new roads, floods, border problems, or whatever?

Hamas exploits humanitarian aid

Oped, Orna Sagiv, Published on 01/08/2025

» Across Gaza, humanitarian aid is urgently needed. Yet much of it fails to reach the people for whom it is intended. Instead, international assistance is routinely hijacked by Hamas -- a reality enabled by the troubling complicity of the United Nations.

Trump to challenge global order

Oped, Kantathi Suphamongkhon, Published on 22/11/2024

» With President Donald Trump back in the White House, the fate of the liberal international order created by the US at the end of World War II is at risk.
