Guns and guests

Oped, Postbag, Published on 12/09/2025

» Re: "Beijing 'centre' of new world order", (World, Sept 5). The display of China's latest weapons and what its mammoth military parade means on the world stage could be misconstrued as a cruel celebration of the cast of invited autocrats and despots (sans the belligerent and offended Trump).

Road safety can't wait

Oped, Editorial, Published on 19/11/2024

» Every third Sunday of November is World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims -- a time for relatives of victims around the world to honour the lives lost or those disabled by traffic crashes. Running for 21 consecutive years, the global event has become a way for civic groups to launch campaigns or pressure the government to do more to reduce accidents.

UN turns blind eye to terrorism

Oped, Orna Sagiv, Published on 20/09/2024

» Last month, the United Nations observed the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism with a poignant exhibit at its New York headquarters. However, the display was notably incomplete, as it failed to acknowledge any acts of terrorism against Israelis. This omission was particularly glaring given the horrific mass attack by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad last October, which resulted in 1,125 deaths and over 250 hostages.

Warsaw Uprising a lesson for all

Oped, Orna Sagiv, Published on 27/01/2023

» January 27 was designated by the UN as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day to commemorate the six million Jews that were murdered in the Holocaust. During World War II, the Nazi regime systematically and brutally annihilated, in cold blood, six million Jews, including one million children, together with another five million people of other "unwanted" groups.

Oped, Orna Sagiv, Published on 27/01/2022

» Today, we join the international community in commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is a day when we recall the darkest time in human history, when an entire people was targeted for complete destruction.

OPINION

Keep goading FAD

Oped, Postbag, Published on 19/06/2021

» I realise you can't publish a letter full of photographs, but I'm submitting this in the hope that you will continue goading the Fine Arts Department (FAD) into upping its game when it comes to preserving the kingdom's Heritage.

OPINION

Holocaust education is a battle worth fighting

Oped, Meir Shlomo, Published on 27/01/2021

» Every year, on Jan 27, we come together to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day. During the Second World War, the Nazi regime annihilated, systemically and brutally, in cold blood, no fewer than six million Jews, including more than one million children. This genocide brought us face to face with the extent of man's capacity for inhumanity to his fellow man.

OPINION

A step closer to a world without nuclear weapons

Oped, Sippakorn Chongchuwanich, Published on 20/01/2021

» Last year, the world commemorated the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, events so catastrophic that they burnt themselves into our collective memory, and have continued to define our geopolitical landscapes to this day.

OPINION

Now is the time to end violence against women

Oped, Sarah Taylor, Published on 07/12/2020

» On the occasion of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, I wanted to share some personal reflections on this important issue. As Canadian ambassador to Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, my role is to build bridges and understanding between these countries. It is also to find ways for our countries to face shared challenges -- and few issues challenge our societies more deeply than gender-based violence, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
