LIFE

The grey area

B Magazine, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 10/11/2019

» To this day, no one can really say for certain what happened to Dear Tommy, a supposed follow-up to Chromatics' stunning 2012 opus Kill For Love. According to the popular (and, perhaps, most credible) myth, the record and its previously released singles were scrapped entirely by the band's producer Johnny Jewel, re-recorded, and then … silence. Dear Tommy, it seems, is being put on the back burner, and in its place we have their latest release, Closer To Grey, instead.

Portrait Of An Artist

B Magazine, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 06/10/2019

» "I just don't wanna be back in this place again/ I mean, I done cried a little/ Tried a little, failed a little/ I don't wanna do it again," Brittany Howard confesses on History Repeats, a funky opener to her solo debut Jaime. Built on acid jazz and neo-soul groove, the song bustles with the genre-blurring spirit of her former band Alabama Shakes and her own irreverent energy. Singing those words, Howard sounds empowered and energised like a weight has been lifted. "History repeats and we defeat ourselves/ Come on everybody, one more time again," before you know it, the song turns into an infectious anthem, leaving in its wake a glimpse into her self-discovery that would go on to define the rest of the album.

» This isn't working. My back hurts. This is a waste of time. I could've had a week in Paris. My back hurts.

The Art of Growing Old

B Magazine, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 03/02/2019

» "Attending an unplanned party/ Never ready, didn't really wanna come/ Saying 'hello' to acquaintances/ Gotta be careful not to smile too much/ It just wouldn't be appropriate," without knowing the track's title, the opening verse of The Charapaabs' debut single, Sala Kon Sao (Funeral Party), reads like something of a typical introvert's diary. As the second verse arrives, it becomes clear that the aforementioned "party" is actually a funeral where "the host refrains from making an appearance" (worth noting a clever wordplay here -- ook long, literally "out of coffin", is used instead of ook rong, which is a Thai expression meaning to make an appearance).

Where East meets West

» A metropolis of more than 15 million people, and historically one of the world's most vibrant cities, Istanbul has always been a mix of Western culture and Eastern exoticism.

Greyscale greatness

B Magazine, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 09/09/2018

» They look like pictures that could have been taken on Mars, if not heavily Photoshopped, but Tom Jacobi emphasises again and again that all his photos are of real and uncontrived structures on Earth. Ranging from deserts with pockets of water to dramatic mountain ranges, his photographs capture a world you've likely never seen before -- largely in grey tones because he has gotten up at 4am to get these shots.

Mitski, demystified

B Magazine, By Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 26/08/2018

» Born to an American father and a Japanese mother, Mitski Miyawaki spent her childhood essentially being a nomad and a stranger in foreign lands. After stints in countries like Congo and Turkey, she relocated to New York, where she pursued her artistic passions, dabbling in film study before eventually focusing on music. This gave her a bit of a head start in the industry because, by the time she graduated, she'd already self-released two records, Lush and Retired From Sad, New Career In Business, as part of her school projects.

LIFE

A man of value

B Magazine, Duangkamol Panya, Published on 22/07/2018

» The most legendary law enforcer in Thai history, Khun Phantharak Rajjadej, stopped crimes and cleaned up the bandits all with nothing more than a police badge, the gravitas of a peacekeeper, and perhaps, as legend has it, immortality which he derived from ancient Thai witchcraft.
