An elegy to lost worlds

Life, Kenneth Barrett, Published on 28/03/2026

» A large, booming presence as bureau chief of the Associated Press in Bangkok for more than 30 years, a war reporter in Indochina before that, thrice president of the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand, Denis Gray has through six turbulent decades occupied front row seats, and foxholes, to report on some of the most violent upheavals of our times.

Project Hail Mary: Two friends, one universe

Khanaphot Saengchai, Published on 27/03/2026

» I never imagined that Sign of the Times could fit so perfectly and hauntingly into a sci-fi film about the end of the world. Like the song, Project Hail Mary (2026) is a slow burn, visually spectacular and, importantly, a moving story simply about a relationship bound by world-ending threats.

Robots get smooth moves

Life, James Hein, Published on 25/03/2026

» The subject of the week is robots. The amount of news on these keeps growing and growing. South Korea is first up here with their KAIST Humanoid. In the field test, the robot was shown running across a soccer pitch, jumping, taking shots on goal, and even doing dance moves akin to the Michael Jackson moonwalk. Many robot demonstrations still look a bit stiff but these moves were quite smooth. The robot can run at about 12kph on flat ground with the next goal at 14kph. It can climb a ladder with 40cm steps and the knees can generate 320 Newton metres of peak torque so it can push heavier objects. The current model is based on the lower human half but the goal is for a full humanoid form that can work with people in industrial environments.

A wander through pink hotel rooms

Life, Anna Neatpisarnvanich, Published on 21/03/2026

» We've all been there. You've paced all seven floors, had coffee breaks until you're full and stared at enough mannequins to last a lifetime. Bangkok moves at a rapid speed, and sometimes the "mall crawl" leaves you craving a quiet corner and a chance to actually make something rather than just buy it.

LIFE

From Edo to Edinburgh

Life, Sawarin Suwichakornpong, Published on 14/03/2026

» The opera based on the long and industrious life of Japanese print master Katsushika Hokusai had its world premiere in Glasgow and travelled to Edinburgh for two consecutive nights last month. I braved the strong winds of the Edinburgh evening to watch The Great Wave at the Festival Theatre on its last day.
